Our dear mother, Darlene Marie Sweatt, 85, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in Reno, Nevada.
Darlene is survived by her daughter, Diana Zimmer of Clayton, Calif.; grandsons Eric Zimmer of Clayton, Calif. and Jason Zimmer of Clayton, Calif.; daughter Michaela Sweatt of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and daughter Brenda and her husband Klark Staffan of Reno, Nev. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ronald Sweatt.
Darlene was born in Burns, Oregon, on November 11, 1939, to Leo and Grace (Gunderson) Brophy and was raised by her beloved grandmother Rose (McAndrews) Brophy until she moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon, to live with her loving aunt and uncle, Bill and Hope Lindy. In 1957, she graduated from Sacred Heart High Academy in Klamath Falls, where she began her lifelong love of music and dance. In her youth, she was trained in ballet, tap and other dance styles, learned violin and piano, and was a lifeguard and swim instructor. She studied at the San Francisco Ballet. She graduated from Southern Oregon University with her teaching credential and later earned a master’s degree in physical education.
In 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Klamath Falls, she married James Ronald Sweatt and they honeymooned in South Lake Tahoe. They raised their three daughters in Ventura, California, where they lived for thirty years. Darlene taught fourth and fifth grade at Washington Elementary School and then at Elmhurst Elementary School. The family enjoyed music, theatre, and outdoor activities, including ocean boating, water skiing, and camping.
As a California Master Teacher for the California Arts Council, she instructed other teachers how to incorporate music, drama and dance into their classrooms. A Bravo! teacher award winner and master Orff percussion instrument teacher, “Mrs. Sweatt” believed the arts were important in developing intellectually and physically healthy, happy children. Throughout her lifetime, she inspired thousands of children by offering music and drama programs, including choirs, talent shows, plays, Christmas programs, patriotic programs, and many more arts experiences. In both Ventura and South Lake Tahoe, she organized an annual Folk Dance Festival where she taught children the dance of many cultures, including Mexican, Hawaiian, African, and American. She helped children learn how to achieve their full potential, and her former students included professional athletes, an Olympic Gold Medalist, an Oscar winner, and a high-level Federal State Department official.
After retiring back to their beloved South Lake Tahoe, her husband, “Jimmy,” passed all too soon in 2001. Darlene lived a full life in South Lake Tahoe for 20 years, teaching at St. Theresa’s Catholic School, leading children’s choirs, singing with the Tahoe Community Choir, tutoring and offering piano lessons until 2020. She cherished her time with her grandsons, sharing holidays and outdoor activities, and attending their sporting events. She was a sweet, joyful, and caring person. She had an incredible work ethic and believed that positivity leads to success in life.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 pm at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA. Donations in her honor may be made to St Theresa Catholic Church or the Tahoe Arts Project.
