We are very excited to welcome Kevin Whalen as our guest speaker on November 20. Kevin is a South Shore resident and beloved member of Tahoe Art League, having served on our Board as well. After a life of government service, then as a prolific ceramic artist (Spirit Animals!), he has now ventured into the world of music. But let me back up a bit, or should I say, a lifetime…
I had a candid and provocative phone conversation with Kevin a couple of weeks ago to prepare for this story. He told me he started playing piano at the age of four, then guitar at age six. He writes his own music and lyrics, writes all the time, always on lined paper. His music is archived on cassette tapes and 4-tracks, so you know his talent goes way back. He will be speaking to us about how to create new art, the creative process, and moving into new mediums without fear. He will talk more about breaking down the roadblocks: the inner critic that is your own worst enemy, and the outer critics that bash people and interrupt the creative process.
Kevin will address the issue of artists getting stuck in a rut. His motto is “Just Do Your Art.” The creative process of simply doing your art is what artists should strive for.
