
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1 p.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday.
The warning is for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, including Stateline, Glenbrook, Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Truckee, and Markleeville.
The next storm brings with it heavy snow. Expect snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches below 6500 ft with 8 to 20 inches above 6500 feet. Snow accumulations of 6 to 14 inches west of Highway 89 with up to 30 inches along the Sierra crest is expected along with ridge winds gusting up to 120 mph. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and wave heights of 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday and Saturday commutes. Very strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
There is a new storm on the horizon for Monday.
Friday – Snow before 4 pm, then rain and snow likely. High near 40. South wind around 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.
Friday Night – Rain and snow likely before 1 am, then snow. Low around 25. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.
Saturday – Snow. High near 39. Breezy, with a south wind of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible.
Saturday Night – Snow, mainly before 10 pm. Low around 15. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch is possible.
Sunday – Sunny, with a high near 40. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
Sunday Night – Mostly cloudy, with a low of around 20.
