SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The atmospheric river is living up to its name as heavy rain fell overnight throughout the region, leaving in its wake rivers in flood stage, roads impassable, and major issues for the homeless of South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) has staff suited up along the Upper Truckee River and the meadow behind Motel 6 after reports of homeless people in danger. SLTFR has a drone up right now as they believe everyone got out, but Fire Chief Jim Drennan said they are making sure all are safe. He said homeless camps were washed out as the water level in the meadow is almost to US50.

There is some localized flooding in South Lake Tahoe near homes and in garages.

In El Dorado County, roads are closed on the west slope due to flooding.

Sandbags are still available at SLTFR Station 3 and 1834 Santa Fe Road in Meyers. The Recreation Center sand area is closed at this time due to flooding. The center is also closed.

All City snow removal operations staff are deployed. Snow plow operations are underway and will continue through the weekend as required. At this time there is no evacuation center set up.

For El Dorado County flooding issues, call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 530-621-6600. In South Lake Tahoe, call the Snow Operation line at 530-542-6030. Leave messages as it is being monitored.
