Hold on to your small pets and little ones. There’s strong winds ahead.
Well, maybe not that dramatic but there is the potential for some gusty gusts and big waves along the shores of Lake Tahoe over the next 24 hours or so.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory and Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Wednesday morning.
Winds should increase today with the strongest coming late tonight and through tomorrow morning. Winds today will be from the southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Wind tonight and Wednesday morning will be from the southwest, 20 to 35 mph, with gusts to 55 mph and ridge gusts near 100 mph.
Wave heights on Lake Tahoe are expected to be anywhere from 2 to 4 feet and up to 5 feet Wednesday night. The highest waves are expected on the north and east shores, from Stateline Point to Zephyr Cove. Small boats prone to capsizing should stay off the lake.
There’s a Winter Weather Advisory for the west slope of the northern Sierra Nevada with 4 to 8 inches possible above 7,000 feet that could impact travelers over Highway 50 Echo Summit and Interstate 80 over Donner Pass.
Forecasters don’t think much in the way of significant snowfall will make it over the Sierra into the Lake Tahoe Basin. Therefore the forecast calls for a slight chance of snow today, a 40 percent chance of snow tonight and a 30 percent chance of snow Wednesday. Expect sunny skies Thanksgiving Day.
