SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – El Dorado County Elections has released its first update of vote counts since election night on June 7. They reported that 23,000 ballots still had to be counted on Wednesday morning, and that number is down to about 1,000 plus any ballots that were mailed in by Tuesday that hadn’t been delivered yet.

El Dorado County Registrar Bill O’Neill said there are about 800 mail-in ballots left to count, and an estimated 200 provisional and conditional voter registrations (CVR) in that approximate 1,000 left to count on Monday.

“The team worked hard,” said O’Neill of his staff that worked to get as many counted in three days as they did. So far there have been about 6,000 ballots with unqualified write-in names, and sometimes the voter put an unqualified write-in on every contest. O’Neill said there were no original write-ins and they saw a lot of “Mickey Mouse” and more of the same invalid candidate names they see at election time.

At this time, records show voter turnout was just over 44 percent with 60,759 ballots cast out of the 137,610 registered voters in El Dorado County. In the Lake Tahoe portion of El Dorado County, almost 34 percent of registered voters turned out to vote.
