
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Celebrate HSI STEM week at the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). Radical Innovative Scholars Advancing STEM (RISAS) is the newest program on the LTCC campus after they received a five-year $5 million federal grant to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students pursuing various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) degrees. They join other Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) receiving funds to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students who are interested in pursuing education and careers in STEM. Students at LTCC who are majoring in Math, Computer Information Sciences, Cybersecurity, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Geography, Geology, and other STEM-related programs can take advantage of R.I.S.A.S.
They start off the new year with a special week of RISAS HSI STEM programs for the community.
Monday 1/9 – 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. – In the Aspen Room-L103. Lunch will be provided. Stop by and meet their hard-working team!
Tues 1/10: 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. – Environmental Storytelling Part 1 – In the Aspen Room-L103. Lunch will be provided. Stop by and learn more about the intersectionality that exists between STEM and cultural-linguistic identities.
Wed 1/11: Lotería Night: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. – In the Board/Aspen Room-L103/L104. Dinner will be provided. Stop by and support via a very popular cultural game. All proceeds will go toward graduation gifts for future STEM graduates. $5 is required to play.
Th 1/12: Environmental Storytelling Part 2 – 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. – In A250. Lunch will be provided.
Th 1/12: Evening lecture: 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. in A211. Dinner will be provided. Stop by both in the afternoon and evening as we expand on intersectional work with a very special guest from UC Berkeley.
Fri 1/13: Hombres de Color (Men of Color) in STEM: 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Theater, F111. Dinner will be provided, buffet style in the lobby.

Short commentary and discussion following the film. In 2004, four Arizona teenagers won the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) Underwater Robotics competition with a rover cobbled together from PVC pipe and spare parts. Three of the four winners were undocumented and risked deportation when they traveled to Santa Barbara to win MATE’s top prize.
