Kirkwood Mountain Resort will be at Sports Basement Stores

Expedition Kirkwood will be holding free backcountry awareness clinics at the Sports Basement stores at the Presidio and on Bryant Street the weekend of Dec. 2-3.

“Most incidents that occur in the backcountry happen because people are not prepared to be there,” explains Jon Copeland, Director of Expedition Kirkwood. “Two of our goals at Expedition Kirkwood are to educate people on making smart decisions when in the backcountry and to train them on how to make a predetermined plan.”

The backcountry awareness clinics will cover avalanche awareness and avoidance, equipment usage, snow observation tips and resources, and safe terrain travel.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort averages 600 inches of snow every winter and is a class one avalanche zone.

“People are going to explore the captivating and challenging terrain in and around Kirkwood,” says Copeland. “The best way to do that is with the proper equipment, training and a high degree of knowledge. These clinics are a good first step.”

Expedition Kirkwood offers classes all winter covering everything from basic backcountry awareness to more advanced AIRE level 1 and 2 courses. The resort also offers guided cat skiing operations.

The clinics at the Sports Basement will begin each day at 6pm with preregistration highly recommended. Sign up forms can be found by visiting the events page at Kirkwood.com
