Two upcoming series of classes offered by the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department will train participants to become water safety instructors and lifeguards.

The American Red Cross Blended Learning Water Safety Instructor Class and participants must register for this class by April 28 at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. American Red Cross Certified Instructor Larry Phippen will be teaching the calls that trains candidates to teach courses and presentations in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.

The course helps develop instructors understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Successful candidates are eligible to teach Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn to Swim, adult-focused courses, as well as the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses and more. Participants must be at least 16 years of age, be proficient swimmers, and able to successfully complete the pre-course session.

American Red Cross Certified Instructor Liz Terzian will be teaching the lifeguard training classes, and she will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

Participants must be at least 15 years of age, be able to swim 300 yards continuously while demonstrating breathing control and rhythmic breathing, tread water for two minutes using the legs only, and complete a timed event. The class includes 7 hours and 25 minutes of online learning and 20 hours of hands-on instruction.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive the American Red Cross Certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, which is valid for two years. Attendance at all facility sessions and completion of all online lessons are two of a number of requirements necessary to successfully pass for certification.

Water Safety Sessions: 4 Classes on Saturdays April 30, May 7, May 14 and May 21, 10:00am – 5:00pm (must register by April 28th). Cost is $125 for Class Course (up to $85 materials fee may apply).

Lifeguard sessions (Pre-course and swim test: By appointment (Please call 530-542-6059). Five classes on Tuesdays and Thursday, May 17 – 31 from 4:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. (must register by May 13th). Cost is $125 for Class Course (up to $45 materials fee may apply)
