SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. –  Students and staff at Sierra House Elementary School in South Lake Tahoe will be recognizing World Down Syndrome Day on Friday, March 21. and honoring their students who have Down Syndrome

3/21 is a significant day because it represents the extra 21st chromosome that has to be present to cause Down Syndrome.

All of our DNA strands have 23 pairs of chromosomes – 46 of them. These determine the various things that make each of us different and unique. With Down Syndrome, and extra chromosome has been added to the 21st pair. – so 47 of them.

So…those individuals have MORE than the rest of us.

Down Syndrome generates physical and mental issues and tends to make those individuals prone to several health issues, but they are people who also have feelings and emotions like everyone else.

Lots of Socks Campaign

On 21 March, choose some socks that are going to get noticed!

At Sierra House, everyone is encouraged to wear mismatched crazy socks in recognition of their classmates with Down Syndrome.

Everyone can join in with mismatched socks or your boldest and most colorful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks, you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

Then, you can tell them everything you want them to know about Down syndrome.
