SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A 25-year-old Southern California man died at Kirkwood on Saturday. Roman Lacayo, an aspiring firefighter, was snowboarding on an intermediate trail near Chair 4 at the resort southwest of Lake Tahoe when he had an accident. Details of what happened are unknown, but Kirkwood Mountain Resort says Lacayo was transported to the Barton Medical Clinic at the base of the ski area after Kirkwood Ski Patrol responded to a “medical incident.” After further emergency care and evaluation, Lacayo was pronounced deceased at the clinic.

“On behalf of the full team here at Kirkwood, we extend our deepest sympathy and support to the guest’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time,” said Ricky Newberry, Kirkwood VP and GM.

Lacayo’s friends and family started a GoFundMe fundraiser in hopes of easing some of the financial burdens that come with funeral expenses, medical costs, and the time his mother, Cristyana, needs to grieve.

The GoFundMe account says of Lacayo, “His adventurous spirit, kind heart, and infectious smile brought joy to everyone who knew him.” For more on the fundraiser, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-cristyana-romans-loving-legacy.
