The State of California Indoor Radon Program has provided free radon test kits for residents of Sugar Pine Village in South Lake Tahoe, California. The purpose is to find out if there is radon present in the buildings since no radon prevention was included during the planning or construction of the affordable housing project.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into homes built over granitic soils, such as we have here in South Lake Tahoe. According to the US EPA, radon is a Class One carcinogen, which causes over 21,000 cases of lung cancer in the US each year. According to the California Radon Test Database, over 40 percent of homes in South Lake Tahoe that have been tested have high radon.
If you are a resident of Sugar Pine Village (especially a ground-floor resident) and would like a free Radon test kit, please email or text me with your contact information, and I will mail or deliver you a free radon test kit.
Ground floor residents are most likely to have high radon if radon exists in the buildings.
