Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand, says “Don’t you see?” (Robert Hunter)
David J. Ouellette arrived in South Lake Tahoe in 1989 and never left. He was known to many as “Spyglass Dave” at the sports book(s) over the years. Who is that guy looking through a spyglass, and how does he know so much about college basketball?? There are countless memories of decades of NCAA College basketball tournaments among his many friends throughout the country.
David became part of the destination for many people. His beloved L.A. Dodgers will have to carry on without David.
We are all privileged to have known him. David leaves us with many lessons in life. He never let a mere sight impairment slow him down. He walked through the winter snow like he had perfect vision. He managed a lifetime of obstacles that most of us cannot imagine. There was the occasional close call with a stray car, but that was just David living life to the fullest. He was not going to let a handicap ruin his life.
We can all learn from David’s example.
David passed away quietly on July 5, 2025, after a sudden and brief illness; so many of his friends may not know. David is survived by his older brother Dennis Ouellette, sister-in-law, June, nieces Kathy Ouellette-Pfeifer, and Laurie Ouellette-Oleyourryk from upstate New York; younger sister Janet Ouellette-Westra, brother-in-law Martin Westra, Jr, and nephew Cody Westra, from Kalamazoo, MI. David was preceded in passing by his brother Donald, and is survived by nieces and nephews Brandy, Angela, Donald, Amber, Jean, and Dustin. David is also now reunited with his beloved younger sister Jane, who also preceded him in passing, and is survived by brother-in-law Charles Horn, III and nieces and nephews Sara, Jennifer, Kristi, and George IV.
