SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Lake Tahoe and the rest of the Lake Tahoe area will be under heavy snow conditions throughout Christmas Day and night, according to the weather forecast. Conditions can change quickly, so watch the California and Nevada road situations if you are venturing out. Snow removal conditions are in place, and no parking on the roadway is allowed unless otherwise permitted, so plows can remove the snow.
The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Greater Lake Tahoe area from Yuba Pass to Ebbetts Pass for Thursday and Thursday night. Avalanches are expected to occur across backcountry terrain. This does not include ski areas or highways where avalanche mitigation programs exist. Rapidly accumulating snowfall and gale-force winds that blow and drift snow have created dangerous avalanche conditions in the mountains. Natural avalanches are likely, and human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury or injure people are very likely. Traveling in, near, or below backcountry avalanche terrain is not recommended during HIGH avalanche danger. Consult https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/ or www.avalanche.org for more detailed information.
The National Weather Service in Reno says to expect areas of fog before 9 p.m. Thursday, and then again Friday morning after 2 a.m. with freezing fog areas between 9 p,m, and 2 a,m.

SR 88 has had travel issues throughout the storm. CHP and Caltrans closed the Carson Pass temporarily to recover stranded vehicles, a situation caused by an unsafe vehicle that went through chain controls without any traction control devices. That car became disabled west of Red Lake in the avalanche area, causing a commercial truck and others to get stuck. The road has reopened, but watch road controls as situations can change rapidly.
