KYBURZ, Calif. – Caltrans is proposing a speed limit increase on US50 through Kyburz, and public input on the change is being sought by the El Dorado County supervisors.
During the Board of Supervisors’ meeting on April 21, the topic will be on the agenda, set to be heard at 10 a.m.
Speed limit maximums could be raised in sections of US50 from the Kyburz Maintenance Station at 0.2 miles east of 33 Mile Stone, based on Caltrans’ Engineering & Traffic Surveys. The County wants public opinion, and they will forward all comments to Caltrans before the May 7, 2026, deadline.
When Caltrans conducts traffic surveys, they measure how many drivers go over the posted speed limit, and if enough do, they say it warrants a raise to the maximum speed.
Per vehicle code, Caltrans has to provide an opportunity for a public hearing whenever speed limit changes are suggested to listen to residents’ concerns, if there are any.
The City of South Lake Tahoe was able to prevent Caltrans from raising the speed limits on several segments of the highway through town after its 2024 survey. The public and city officials spoke out and were able to prevent the change that rewards speeders.
Many who live in the area of Kyburz are concerned about public safety if the speed limit is raised. There is now an open restaurant along with a hotel, store, and post office, as well as several crossroads, schools, and a fire station.
The Supervisor Chamber is located at 330 Fair Lane, Building A, Placerville, for those wanting to attend in person, or it can be viewed on Zoom. When the agenda is posted, the link will be available HERE.
