SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Every once in a while, someone sends me a project that makes me stop for a second and actually think.
Not just “cool idea” — but huh… yeah, that hits.
Saturn’s House is one of those.
It’s a project by local artist Katelyn — a 15’ x 15’ wooden cube she’s building for Burning Man this year. It’s also her final project for her Master’s in Depth Psychology + Creativity, which she’s wrapping up in August.
At face value, it’s simple: a big wooden cube. But the idea behind it is where it gets interesting.
The Idea Behind It
The whole project is built around something called the Saturn Return. Even if you’re not into astrology, you’ve probably felt it.
It’s that stretch of life — usually late 20s — where things shift. You start asking bigger questions. What am I doing? Where am I going? What actually matters?
Some people call it a reset. Others call it a wake-up call.
Either way, it’s real.
Katelyn’s take on it isn’t mystical or abstract. It’s grounded:
Life puts pressure on you — responsibility, limits, challenges — and instead of fighting that, you can use it to actually become more clear, more solid, more yourself.
That’s what this piece is holding space for.
Why A Cube?
She chose a cube on purpose.
- Six sides — tied to Saturn (the 6th planet)
- Strong, balanced, simple
- Feels solid… like something you can stand inside and actually be still for a second
It’s not meant to be flashy. It’s meant to be experienced. You walk in, and ideally, you slow down a bit. Maybe think. Maybe just breathe for a minute.
Why This Fits Tahoe
Tahoe has always had this quiet, creative side to it.
Not everything here is polished or packaged. A lot of it is people just building things because they feel like it matters.
This feels like that.
It’s not a big commercial play. It’s not trying to go viral. It’s just someone taking a real-life moment — that transition into adulthood, or into the next phase of life — and turning it into something physical.
And honestly, most people around here have gone through that moment… or are in it right now.
