If you just moved into Sugar Pine Village, I have a free gift for you —
and I hope you’ll take me up on it.
My name is Jeff Miner. I’ve been working on radon awareness in South
Lake Tahoe for over twenty years through my organization, Radon at Tahoe
(radonattahoe.com). Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that
seeps up through granite soil — exactly the kind of soil our entire
South Shore sits on. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in
the United States, and the number one cause among non-smokers. The
California Geological Survey’s radon risk map shows nearly the entire
South Shore in bright red: very high risk. And actual test results back
that up — over 40% of South Lake Tahoe homes that have been tested come
back with dangerous radon levels.
Sugar Pine Village is a wonderful addition to our community. But it was
not built with radon-resistant construction — because it wasn’t
required. That doesn’t mean the building has high radon. It means we
don’t know. And the only way to know is to test.
Ground-floor units carry the highest risk, because radon enters from below.
The California Indoor Radon Program has provided me with free mail-in
radon test kits to give to South Lake Tahoe residents. I have roughly 50
left. If you live on the ground floor of Sugar Pine Village — or know
someone who does — please contact me. I will send you a free kit, no
strings attached. It takes two days to run the test, and you mail it in
for results.
This is not about an alarm. It’s about knowing. If your unit tests low,
great — peace of mind. If it tests high, it can be fixed affordably. But
you can’t fix what you don’t know about.
