SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Lake Tahoe Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recently became Destination Champions through the new Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Program. Past Chapter Regent Jini Becktell explained that this project fit wonderfully with the group’s goal of community education.
“All members who took the course learned something new and were glad to have information about Tahoe to share with others,” said Becktell.
This self-paced online training program is designed to increase the knowledge of the Tahoe/Truckee area and inspire participants to better convey the culture and pace.
Since its launch at the end of January, the self-paced Destination Champion online training program has continued to see enrollment grow, with participants self-identifying as front line workers, hospitality professionals, business owners, nonprofit employees, seasonal workers and residents. The Destination Stewardship Council reports closing survey feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with participants describing the course as “very well put together,” and “engaging and easy to follow” thanks to short, effective video segments and content.
“Within the program, the modules include everything from tips for engaging with people – including handling challenges and difficult situations – to familiarization with the three regions of North Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe and Truckee,” said Nettie Pardue, managing director of the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council. “There are also modules about the Washoe people and their history, what sustainable tourism means for the region, and best practices in the outdoors.”
Several participants have specifically praised the section on empathy and de-escalation, noting its practical relevance for frontline hospitality professionals.
The program was created by the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council in collaboration with the Tahoe Chamber, North Tahoe Chamber, and Truckee Chamber and is hosted by Learn Tourism.
The Lake Tahoe Chapter is hoping that their taking this training will encourage other service organizations to join DAR as Destination Champions. To learn more in the free Destination Champion training program, go to: sewardshiptahoe.org (destination champion),
