SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is holding its next board meeting on Thursday, June 25. The meeting starts at 5 p.m., and the trustees go into closed session, with the regular session starting no earlier than 6 p.m.

A parent group, superintendent public meetings, and previous board meetings have discussed the topic of an updated cell phone policy for South Lake Tahoe schools. Those led to the creation of a community group made up of students, staff, and families, which was formed to discuss possible changes to the current Board policy.

On Thursday, South Tahoe High Principal Justin Zunino, who led the committee, will present findings and suggested policy changes to the board. It is the staff’s intention for a new cell phone policy to be an action item during the August 13, 2026, meeting.

The committee’s suggestions:

TK-5th grade

  • New Recess and Lunch Policy – Explicit prohibition of personal devices during break times
  • New Storage Policy – Devices to be powered off and kept away from students
  • New Digital Literacy – Instructional focus for all students on responsible device use
  • Stays the Same – Personal devices are not needed during school hours.
  • Operational Impact – Implementation of storage procedures and ongoing instructional supports

Middle School (6-8)

  • New Storage Policy – Devices powered off and kept away from students
  • New Digital Literacy – Instructional focus for all students on responsible device use
  • New Digital Literacy – Requirement of a new digital literacy curriculum for all students.
  • Stays the Same – Personal device use remains restricted throughout the school day
  • Operational Impact – Implementation of storage procedures and ongoing instructional supports

High School (9-12)

  • Stays the Same – Phones allowed during lunch time
  • New Passing Periods – Elimination of passing-period phone use
  • New Digital Literacy – Instructional focus for all students on responsible device use
  • New Storage Plan – Consistent, secure device storage for every classroom
  • New Teacher Support – Support for replacing instructional phone use
  • Operational Impact – Implementation of storage procedures and ongoing instructional supports

If approved in August, LTUSD would need to develop consistent device storage
procedures for each level.

Also at the meeting, a MOU is set to be approved between the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and LTUSD that will have two School Resource Officers (SRO) assigned to the District, one at South Tahoe High School and one at South Tahoe Middle School. Each entity will pay for one of the officers. Over the past several years, one person has been the SRO for both schools.
