SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Mechanical treatments to remove hazardous fuels are scheduled to begin Monday, July 27, 2026, off Mt. Tallac Road on the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Work is expected to continue through the end of October 2026, as conditions, staffing, and weather allow.
For public safety, access to some areas may be temporarily disrupted when work is taking place. The public should be aware of thinning activity and keep a safe distance from equipment. Hazards may be present even when operations have ceased for the day.
The public can expect to see crews staging equipment, chipping and hauling of woody material, heavy equipment and mechanical whole tree removal. Whole tree removal involves cutting the entire tree and moving it to the landing area to remove limbs and cut it into sections.
Visitors to Mt. Tallac Trailhead, Camp Shelly and Camp Concord should avoid entering active thinning areas and be aware of potential traffic delays as recreation opportunities and experiences may be temporarily affected as work progresses.
The Taylor Creek Mechanical project aims to treat approximately 125 acres this season and is part of the South Tahoe Fuels Treatment Project to promote healthy and resilient forests while protecting homes and communities from wildfire.
Funding for this project was made possible through the Bureau of Land Management’s Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act in coordination with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service.
