Council approves contract and bond sale for new recreation center in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/08/2023 - 10:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – It's not going to be cheap, but when all is said and done, South Lake Tahoe will have a state-of-the-art recreation and aquatic center for all ages.
During its August 8 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously approved the center which will cost about $70M.
To accomplish this, the Council approved the issuance of 2023 Lease Revenue Bonds for $55M, combined with $12.4M already collected from Measure P funds, $1M from Measure S, $2.7M from ARPA unallocated funds along with some other sources.

Current parking area closing as USFS begins parking upgrades at Chimney Beach Trailhead

USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit contractors are scheduled to begin construction to increase the number of parking spots at the popular East Shore destination. Trails will remain open during construction.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/04/2023 - 2:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wildlife biologists for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) this morning safely immobilized a large female conflict bear responsible for at least 21 DNA-confirmed home break-ins and extensive property damage in the South Lake Tahoe area since 2022. Her three cubs were also captured in the effort. One of the cubs was the one hit by a car on US50 on July 21 near Denny's, but it had been seen often throughout South Lake Tahoe eating, climbing, and walking.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said there was just enough low-level airflow to allow that dust to sneak into the Lake Tahoe Basin.
NDOT installing wrong-way driver detection systems on some Carson City freeway ramps

Beginning Aug. 4 through late August, intermittent shoulder closures will take place during both day and night hours on I-580 freeway ramps between North Carson Street and Fairview Drive.
Caltrans set to deploy state-of-the-art electronic message signs

Caltrans District 3 engineers this month are conducting final tests on the 28 new color-changeable message signs. These signs are a first in the state at a cost of about $2.5 million. Other regions have installed these signs as a pilot project.

West Nile Virus found in El Dorado County bird
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/02/2023 - 10:15pmEl Dorado County health officials received confirmation that a bird found in the Lotus area of El Dorado County tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first this year. The bird, a House Finch, was collected on July 21, 2023. West Nile Virus activity was not detected in El Dorado County in 2022.
Confirmation of the West Nile virus-positive bird means the virus is circulating between birds and mosquitoes and there is a heightened risk of infection in humans.

On the morning of Sunday, July 2, and again on the morning of Monday, July 3, at approximately 4:30 a.m., female guests staying at the Wyndham resort in the 180 block of Elks Point Road in Stateline woke up to an intruder in their room fondling their feet.

This amounts to a 2.44 percent decrease compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,277,029,261. For the fiscal year the gaming win has increased by 3.25 percent with 15,105,608,664 in "win".
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

At approximately 4:10 p.m., WCSO responded to a report of a possible drowning on the east shore of Lake Tahoe.
WCSO Marine 9, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, U.S. Coast Guard, Sand Harbor Lifeguards, and Nevada State Parks all responded to the area and located an unresponsive adult male subject in the water.

New high-end housing project underway in South Lake Tahoe; Zoning change could bring more homes

The ground has already broken on four homes in the approved first phase and the developer hopes to have 20 total in the project area.
The project is not without controversy as the City of South Lake Tahoe looks to amend its Tourist Core Area Plan to change two lots in the project area from being zoned as Recreation to Tourist Core Mixed-Use Housing to accommodate more of the high-end housing units.

The $4M project will create six-foot Class 2 bike lanes on each side of Pioneer Trail from Ski Run Boulevard to Larch Avenue, with five-foot sidewalks on each side, two 11-foot driving lanes, and a foot of gutters on each side. This project also includes pavement rehabilitation.
Nevada State Police release name of victim/more details in fatal crash on US50 at SR28
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/26/2023 - 4:36pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - On July 18, 2023, at approximately 1:40 p.m., troopers from the Nevada State Police responded to a crash at the location of US50 at SR28, located in Douglas County, Nevada.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017 Toyota RAV4 was traveling southbound on SR28, approaching the US50 intersection. An Amador Stage Line passenger bus was traveling westbound on US50 approaching the intersection with SR28.
The Toyota RAV4 failed to stop at the stop sign on SR28 and entered the path of the bus. The front of the bus struck the left side of the Toyota.
Conservancy grants $500K for study to protect wildlife corridors at Lake Tahoe

1st quarter sales taxes collected down in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and California

We`ll return to near-normal July warmth the week ahead with enhanced afternoon breezes through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. This will bring localized areas with critical fire weather conditions in addition to choppy lakes, especially on Monday.
There is a chance for thunderstorms and rain south of Lake Tahoe in Mono County to start off the week, but no precipitation is expected at Lake Tahoe.

As they continue work at Marlette Creek and Crystal Bay, drivers can expect reduced speeds through the work zone and up to 30-minute delays. Construction operations are weather-dependent and subject to change.

USFS announces tentative selections for Lake Tahoe resort concessions
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/21/2023 - 2:57pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has announced its selections for the special use permits for Camp Richardson, Meeks Bay, and Zephyr Cove resorts.
The Granger-Thye Concession special use permits are subject to a 45-day appeal period. The people who applied for the permits can appeal, but not the general public. Both Zephyr Cove and Meeks Bay resorts are staying with the current operators but a change could happen at Camp Richardson resort.

Douglas County School Board hires Joey Gilbert as legal counsel during long, contentious meeting

Once all was said and done, as expected the board terminated the contract with its counsel since 1985, Maupin, Cox & Legoy, and hired Reno attorney and former GOP gubernatorial candidate Joey Gilbert to become DCSD counsel.

To access eastbound I-80, motorists can take a detour along westbound Donner Pass Road to the eastbound I-80 on-ramp, as shown on the map above.

A Powerball ticket sold in South Lake Tahoe had five out of six numbers match in Wednesday night's $1-billion drawing. The lucky person bought the ticket at the 7-11 at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Carson Avenue.
There was one winner of the big jackpot. That winning ticket was sold at Las Palmitas Mini Market in Los Angeles.
The winning numbers were 7, 10, 11, 13, 24 & red Powerball 24.

City updates hours on South Lake Tahoe boat ramp and golf course
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/19/2023 - 4:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has announced an expansion of its hours at the El Dorado Beach Boat Ramp and an update on the Bijou Golf Course.
The boat ramp is now open Friday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The last boat launch is at 4:30 p.m. They are closed on Thursdays. A boat inspection is required before entering Lake Tahoe but they are not provided at this ramp.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport reaches highest passenger traffic records since 2008

In the first six months, the airport served 2.18 million passengers, an increase of 3.6 percent compared to the same period in 2019.
New world record white fir over 265 ft tall found in the Caldor Fire burn scar
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/19/2023 - 10:41amA mere four days before the Caldor Fire erupted in Grizzly Flats, Calif. in August of 2021, our friend, the tall tree hunter Michael Taylor, emailed us that he had located “a special grove of towering white fir” as he was scanning the LiDAR imagery for Eldorado National Forest in the vicinity of Pollock Pines outside Lake Tahoe. Excited by the prospect of surveying the previously unknown and exceedingly tall white firs, he wrote, “We should go there ASAP.”
