Tahoe History Talks on the Beach – Into the Jaws of Hell
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding another Tuesday Night “Tahoe History Talks on the Beach” July 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This week it will be “Into the Jaws of Hell,” a Chautauqua performance by local historian David Woodruff, who portrays the character of William Lewis Manley.
In 1849, Manley was one of dozens of pioneers who stumbled, off-course, into the harsh eastern California desert while searching for a shortcut to the California goldfields. Manley recounts the dramatic and heroic tale
of how stranded, forlorn, and desperate men, women and children endured unfathomable hardships to keep their families alive… and
christened the chilling name upon their fateful location —Death Valley.
The history talk is at Lakeview Commons and there is free parking. The talk is free but donations to the Historical Society are always appreciated.
The final history talk of the summer will be on Tuesday, August 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. when Toogee Sielsch presents “History and Habits of Black Bears in the Lake Tahoe Basin.” Girl Scout Troop 119 recently earned their Bronze Award for their public education outreach on how to coexist with the area’s black bears. They will be part of Toogee’s presentation.
