CARSON CITY — Nearly 250 capital city Democrats took time out today to participate in the party caucus, supporting President Barack Obama in a process that held no surprises for the party faithful.
The caucus at the Carson City Middle School was one of 118 held around Nevada today as the state Democrat Party gears up for the 2012 election.
Unlike 2008, when the Democrat nominee was still undecided at the time of the caucus, the nonbinding ballot had two options: the president or uncommitted. Obama was getting strong support among participants.

Washoe Drive Fire update: Rain soaking fire area, Highway 395 back open

Rain is falling in the valley areas today, including the area burned by the Washoe Drive Fire.
Both lanes of Highway 395 reopened last night after 11 p.m., with National Guard troops standing guard at the entrances of neighborhoods where homes were damaged or destroyed.

New storm to arrive on Sunday; ski resorts prepare for brisk business

Winter weather continues through today in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Ski resorts report up to 2 feet of snow from the system which arrived Friday and continues today. The National Weather Service in Reno reports that a second and much colder storm will move into the area on Sunday into Monday, dropping temperatures and bringing more snow. Here is the latest from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority on the storms:

The change in the weather has been a long time comin' and now it appears to have arrived, to rephrase an old Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song. Here's the latest from the National Weather Service in Reno:
A strong Pacific storm that has prompted a winter storm warning through 10 a.m. Saturday will affect the region tonight bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to the Sierra. The heaviest snowfall is expected to remain above 7,000 feet in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Snow will increase later tonight as the cold system moves through dropping between 2 to 4 inches an hour.

Washoe Drive Fire burns 26 homes, 3,900 acres, Highway 395 between Carson City and Reno still closed

Officials reported this morning that the Washoe Drive Fire destroyed 26 homes, and has currently consumed 3,900 acres.
At a 9 a.m. press conference, officials reported the blaze is 50 percent contained, and that 700 firefighters are working to extinguish hot spots in advance of the high wind that are forecast for this afternoon.
There were 20 homes reported lost last night, but in the light of day, personnel working the fire were able to get a better count of the structures that burned.
