Climate change experts and meteorologists attending Operation Sierra Storm

South Lake Tahoe is host to Operation Sierra Storm each year, a leading national weather conference that brings together those that report the weather with South Lake Tahoe activities and top climate scientists.

The three-day conference runs from January 6-9, 2016 and the public has the opportunity to attend the Friday sessions that feature California State Sen. Pro Tem Kevin de León and Alexander (Sasha) Gershunov, Research Meteorologist for Climate, Atmospheric Science and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Reno Tahoe Airport holding workshops about their role in the local economy

Airports around the country have been impacted by changes in the airline industry, and the Reno Tahoe International Airport is no exception.

Since the entire region an airport services benefits from increased flights and passengers, airport and tourism officials are reaching out to local communities in a series of "Airport 101."

South Lake Tahoe Rotary abandons car raffle; asks for community help

For many years, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has given away a car during their annual Great Car Raffle, but that tradition has come to an end.

Club President Dave Jinkens announced Wednesday that the raffle doesn't raise the money needed to give away almost $50,000 annually to the community through scholarships, donations and grants.

There are two reasons Jinkens said the club had to abandon the raffle. After buying a car and covering the cost of the raffle, proceeds weren't what they once were and they've had to start dipping into reserves to meet donation requests.

South Shore casinos have a good month in November; Win figure up 17%

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their gaming revenue figures Wednesday, and revenue for casinos on the South Shore experienced the biggest gain they've seen in months.

Net revenue for local casinos is up 17.26% when compared to figures from November, 2014, leaving their fiscal year total still down. Local casinos figures are 11.38% lower than the same period last year.

In the state of Nevada, casinos as a whole experienced a net gain of 7.76%, leaving the fiscal year totals almost even with the the prior year.

Sierra snowpack at an encouraging 136% of average

The first snowpack survey of the season was taken Wednesday in Phillips, showing the snowpack us at 136% of average with a water content of 16.3 inches.

"This is encouraging but not where we'd like to be," said Frank Gehkre, the Chief Snow Surveyor for the California Department of Water Resources. "This is clearly much better than last year at this time."

One year ago the survey showed the snowpack at 47% of average.

Day One of SnowGlobe: Excited music fans, very few complaints

There is snow on the ground and a chill in the air, perfect conditions for the thousands of music fans in South Lake Tahoe for SnowGlobe 2015.

Lines of young men and women, some dressed in costume or wearing wild hats, eagerly awaited the begin of the three day music festival. Anticipation had been growing for weeks as the social media hype was on.

New on the South Shore: Neighborhood Burgers opens on Kingsbury

A new burger place has opened on the South Shore, giving residents on the Nevada side of town a new option for eating out (or on the run).

Neighborhood Burgers was opened by locals Erik Watada and Matt Grime, and in less than a week of being open its already a hit.

Grime, owner of The Fox & Hound at the top of Kingsbury, joined Watada in providing an option for people to get a quick bite, especially those on the Nevada side where options are at a minimum.

"Always Buddy" tent set up at SnowGlobe in memory of Alyssa Byrne

It's been three years since 19-year-old Alyssa Byrne from Petaluma, Calif., died after attending New Year's Eve SnowGlobe Music Festival becoming separated from her friends. Her body was found off Pioneer Trail between Black Bart Avenue and Al Tahoe Boulevard on January 4, 2013.

Search and Rescue teams kept busy with stranded motorists and snowmobilers

Heavy snow stranded two snowmobilers and a vehicle in the Sierra Nevada during recent storms, bringing out search and rescue volunteers from both El Dorado and Alpine Counties in the last ten days.

New Year's celebrations in South Lake Tahoe

The following is a list of all 911 calls received by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) from December 11 to December 20, 2015.

December 11: 12 Calls: 4 EMS calls, 3 Interfacility transfers, 1 call for arching electrical equipment, 2 no incidents found, 1 cancelled en route, 1 vehicle accident no injuries.

December 12: 9 calls: 7 EMS calls, 1 public service assistance, 1 cooking fire.

December 13: 1 call: Smoke Detector activation, no fire.

Search and Rescue locates out of bounds snowboarder near Cold Creek

Search and Rescue volunteers from El Dorado County recently responded to a report of an out-of-bounds snowboarder from Heavenly who ended up near the Montgomery Estates neighborhood. Twelve volunteers on skis, snowmobiles and snowshoes made their way about four miles into the wilderness before locating 41 year-old Pavel Kletsov.

On Friday, December 11, Kletsov left the boundaries of Heavenly Valley Ski Resort and ended up in the Cold Creek Drainage, just above Montgomery Estates. Due to the fresh new snow and terrain he got stuck and could not get out on his own.

Upper Truckee Marsh to be restored

After decades of planning, analysis, and public input, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board recently approved the final plan to restore the largest remaining wetland in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Upper Truckee River and Marsh Restoration Project will restore over 500 acres of highly disturbed wetland habitat, improving the natural filtration capacity of the Marsh and reducing a major source of fine sediment that clouds Tahoe’s famed lake clarity.

Chemicals linked with severe respiratory disease found in common e-cigarette flavors

Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake.

Road to SnowGlobe: Three days of music for concertgoers and neighbors

Thousands of music fans will descend upon South Lake Tahoe this week for what has become the most popular outdoor winter music festivals in the country.

Thousands of people will be on hand December 27 through 31 to experience what is being billed as a fusion between music festival, winter expedition and New Year's Eve celebration.

Also promised is cold, with night time temperatures in the low teens. Appropriate clothing and outerwear is strongly encouraged.

Cold temperatures and some snow in forecast for Lake Tahoe

There is a fast moving low pressure system headed to the Sierra Nevada late Sunday. It is a cold system without much moisture. Up to an inch of snow in the lower elevations, though some weather models show 2 to 4 inches with up to 6 inches at the higher elevations.

Countdown to SnowGlobe: Schedule and Shuttle Information

In just a few days, the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival opens in South Lake Tahoe. The three-day music festival will once again be held at the Lake Tahoe Community College and Community Play Fields Tuesday, December 29 through December 31.

Snowshoe hike at Van Sickle for National Winter Trails Day

Celebrate National Winter Trails Day by participating in a FREE guided snowshoe hike in Van Sickle Bi-State Park on January 9, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will learn about Lake Tahoe’s pristine environment while experiencing the enjoyment of snowshoeing.

2016 brings in new laws for California drivers, bikers and more

Hundreds of new California laws take effect on January 1, 2016, many that will have tangible impacts on the lives of Californians as they work, drive, ride a bike and shop.

Here is an overview of some of them:

Transportation:

Disneyland to close attractions to make way for new Star Wars land

To make way for "Star Wars," Disneyland is about to launch its largest expansion ever, which means shutting down a significant chunk of the Anaheim theme park.

In January, 10 attractions and eateries will close — some temporarily, some permanently — only a few months after the resort hiked the price of annual passes as much as 31%. This spring, Disneyland's biggest rival, Universal Studios Hollywood, plans to unveil a widely anticipated Harry Potter attraction.

Local children treated to gifts and banquet by Tahoe Douglas Rotary

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club recently held their annual Children's Christmas party and traditional turkey dinner at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. On the guest list were families from both Live Violence Free and Sierra Child and Family Services. Thirty families and 80 children enjoyed an afternoon of food, entertainment, a visit from Santa and gifts.

Snowfall totals in South Lake Tahoe already surpass winter of 2014

While the storms hitting the Sierra this December are not unusual, they are very different from recent winters.

As of Christmas Day, 2015, all South Lake Tahoe ski resorts are reporting more snow than they had during the whole 2014 ski season.

Heavenly Valley - 167" of snow in November and December, to date; 87" last season.
Sierra-at-Tahoe - 173" reported, 120" last season.
Kirkwood - 194" reported, 188" last season.

Tornado touched down in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park

A tornado warning for parts of El Dorado and Amador counties has been lifted, but the National Weather Service reports that a tornado did touch down in El Dorado Hills near Folsom Lake and in Cameron Park.

Eric Kurth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the tornado touched down in the Browns Ravine area and damage was reported in the area of Hill View Hidden Acres and Mormon Island drives, south of Green Valley Road, in El Dorado Hills about 3 p.m. and moved eastward also touching down in Cameron Park.

'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' holiday song has roots in Lake Tahoe

The man behind the Christmas song, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer," either the most loved or most loathed of the season and certainly one of its most memorable, has no problems being a one-hit wonder and says the song has been both "my blessing and my albatross."

Randy Brooks, 67, a song writer and son of a church organist, told Reuters Wednesday he may not have left his mark on pop culture had it not been for car trouble in Lake Tahoe.

Heavy snow for the Sierras today

It's going to be a white Christmas in Lake Tahoe, with heavy snow expected throughout the day Thursday, leaving an expected extra foot of snow at lake level by Friday morning.

If you are traveling you can expect road controls from chains or snow tire requirements to chains or 4WD with snow tires.

Track Santa with NORAD on Christmas Eve

NORTH POLE —No longer do we need to guess when the big man is coming to town.

Whether you made the Naughty or Nice list, you can track Santa Claus as he goes around the world, delivering presents on Christmas Eve thanks to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The tradition began in 1955 after a Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement in Colorado Springs, Colorado, misprinted the telephone number for children to call Santa. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through operations hotline for the commander of the Continental Air Defense Command.

Kudos: Heavenly Mountain Resort adopts a day at Bread & Broth

Thanks to the generous Vail EpicPromise Grant program funds awarded to Bread & Broth, 12 Monday evening meals are served annually through B&B’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” program. On a monthly basis, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate hosting a dinner and sending a sponsor volunteer crew to work with the B&B volunteers to provide a hot, nutritious meal and “giveaway” bags to South Tahoe Community members dealing with food insecurity.

Pilots blinded by Christmas laser light display in Reno

On Tuesday, December 22, 2015 the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office RAVEN helicopter conducting a routine flight in the Reno area when the pilots were temporarily blinded by red and green lasers that were directed into the helicopter cockpit.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue hosts blood drive and coat drive

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is happy to be hosting both a blood drive and a coat drive in South Lake Tahoe. The goal is to help the community by providing vital blood as a resource within our community and also provide coats to children in need. We encounter children on calls often who could benefit from a coat donation and hope to make a difference with this.

Series of earthquakes in Reno Tuesday evening

Residents of the Reno area have reported feeling several earthquakes Tuesday night from South Reno to Northwest Reno. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory is reporting 11 earthquakes, most with an epicenter about 3.5 miles north of Galena High School and five with a magnitude above or equal to 3.0.

The largest earthquake has been upgraded to a 4.4, an increase from the original 3.4 according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Magnitudes and exact locations may be changed once analysis is completed.

Fire Chief with history of alcohol problems resigns after DUI arrest

Garden Valley Fire Chief William Dekker resigned today after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).

On December 18, at about 1:50 p.m., El Dorado County sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a neighbor dispute in the town of Greenwood, 17 miles north of Placerville. The person who called 911 said his neighbor, Dekker, had threatened to shoot him during a dispute over a loose dog, according to a statement released by the Sheriff's department.
