Fall season is here for USFS prescribed burns in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/03/2015 - 6:20pmThe Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes numerous fire and land management agencies in the Lake Tahoe Basin, will begin fall prescribed fire operations as soon as weather conditions are favorable.
“Prescribed fire is an important tool used to maintain forest health and reduce the build-up of hazardous fuels,” said U.S. Forest Service Fire Management Officer, Kit Bailey. “Cooler, wetter fall weather is an ideal time to carry out these projects that help reduce the chance of wildfire and provide added protection to communities in the Lake Tahoe Basin.”

National Fire Week is October 4-10 this year, and in honor of it the City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue will have all three of their fire stations open to the public.
Each location will have different information, so visit one, or all.
There will be trucks on display, information about fire safety and raffle prizes.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tour the following SLT stations:
Fire Station #1 located at 1252 Ski Run Blvd.
Fire Station #2 located at 2951 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

For many, Sam's Place was where they went after work for pizza and a beer after work. Others enjoyed the pool, outdoor patio, sports on their televisions, slot machines or the camaraderie that comes with a neighborhood bar.
Texas songstress Mandy Rowden announces free Lake Tahoe shows

She will be at BaseCamp Pizza on October 20 at 5 p.m and at the Eagle's Next on October 22 at 7 p.m.
For the album, Rowden called upon the legendary talent of fellow Texans: Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks), Redd Volkaert (Merle Haggard), and Brad Rice (Ryan Adams). Following her highly successful spring tour, Rowden was invited back out west for a handful of special performances.

A certain feeling of helplessness has become the norm when we look at these events from the prevention perspective. We may ask questions like:
“Why do people who would do such a thing have access to a gun?”
“Why didn’t people who knew the shooter do something to stop him before people died?”

On September 19th thousands of youth and families joined City Council and staff to celebrate the Bike Park project with a free BBQ, ice cream, and music. A special thank you to Grill Master, Steve “Tee” Branch and Anthony Pulera for sweating over hot coals for three hours to serve 1000 people hot dogs and burgers.
Big Brothers Big Sisters ribbon cutting at Tahoe Mountain Lab

On October 15, 2015, BBBS will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to announce the expansion of their programs into South Lake Tahoe.
The ceremony will take place from 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tahoe Mountain Lab located at 1048 Ski Run Blvd. The owners of Tahoe Mountain Lab, David and Jamie Orr, have generously donated the space to BBBS for meeting purposes. David was previously a “Little” and considers this an opportunity to “give back” to his community.
Mt. Tallac High School celebrates with community barbecue

"I thought maybe five or six parents would come for our first year," said Greenough, the school's Director. Instead, 21 families and ten community members/groups participated.
"The kids were excited to bring their parents, and the parents were grateful," said Greenough.
South Tahoe High Homecoming parade and games on Friday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/02/2015 - 6:24amStudents at South Tahoe High have been celebrating Homecoming Week festivities all week long, from themed dress-up days to late nights spent building their class floats. The wrap up will be Friday's parade through South Lake Tahoe and Friday night's football games.
The final night of float building was Thursday, when the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's bus garage taken over by students putting on the final touches before judging at 10 p.m. Each class created a float with the assistance of their class advisors.
Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe breaks ground on South Shore

Rain brought the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as people speaking at the ceremony highlighted the major impacts the new project on the state line will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.
160 homes "evacuated" during South Lake Tahoe emergency drill

"The drill went very well," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston. "Overall a success with lessons learned.
He said there was great interagency cooperation with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County STAR and South Lake Tahoe Action teams, Public Works department, and the Red Cross all joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the drill.
Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe indicted on kidnapping charge
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 8:49pmA federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Matthew D. Muller, a 38-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale, charging him with one count of kidnapping.
Muller is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach. He allegedly demanded a $15,000 ransom.

Two million dollars worth of cannabis confiscated in drug bust

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) centered their investigation on tax evasion, money laundering, conspiracy and the commercial distribution of marijuana for profit.
Teenage son arrested in deaths of his family in El Dorado County

On September 13, Cal Fire asked for the assistance of EDSO after they found human remains inside a burnt residence.

The whole community is invited to help clean up Sierra-at-Tahoe during the 9th Annual Keep Sierra Clean Day on Sunday, October 11, 2015. Ride up the Nob Hill chairlift, sweep the mountain of trash and enjoy live music and free lunch on the Solstice Plaza.
In past years, thousands of pounds of trash has been cleared from the summer slopes, brought in by loyal passholders and employees along with community groups and organizations such as the Sierra Education Foundation, local Boy Scouts and West Slope high school ski and snowboard teams.
Golf tournament to raise funds for fallen South Lake Tahoe firefighter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 12:27pmThere will be a golf tournament at the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course on Saturday, October 3 to benefit the family of fallen firefighter, Mikey Hallenbeck.
Hallenbeck, 21, died this summer after a tree fell on him while fighting his first fire as a member of the U.S.F.S. fire crew. He grew up in Shingle Springs, Calif., was living in Meyers at the time of his death and worked at Sierra-at-Tahoe during the winter.
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation will host the tournament, called "Barefoot for Birdies," with all funds raised going to the family as well as the foundation.

Give El Dorado County your opinion via citizen engagement survey

A survey is the first step, and can be taken here. This is the first step and it will be followed by local town hall meetings and focus groups. Information gathered will be presented to the County Supervisors and goal-setting teams.

Crane topples over at Edgewood Tahoe construction site
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/30/2015 - 6:13pmNobody was injured when a crane being operated at the new Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe toppled over on Wednesday afternoon.
The crane, owned by Connolly Crane out of Gardnerville, NV, was getting ready to move when the operator released the brake instead of the house lock according to Kelly Connolly, the owner of Connolly Crane.
Gaming revenues on the South Shore take big hit in August
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/30/2015 - 6:11amThe Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of August, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $18,883,321 which is 33.55% down from the same period in 2014.
When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the big winner was the Boulder Strip in Clark County with income up 29.74%, or $60,246,675. Last month, they were the big loser, this month it was the South Shore.
The state "win" figure was down 1.39% with income of $908,240,074.
The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
Rain and cooler temperatures on tap for South Lake Tahoe

A low pressure system and cold front will provide showers with a slight chance for thunderstorms Thursday according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Showers will concentrate along the cold front which may reach south Lake Tahoe Wednesday evening.

Man arrested for making threats at El Dorado County preschools

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has arrested a 23-year-old Orangevale, CA man in connection with threats made at several El Dorado County preschools and day care centers over the past few days. Many of the schools closed temporarily in response to the threats to staff and children.
Michael McDermort was booked into El Dorado County Jail for charges related to terrorizing threats. As of Tuesday night he was still in jail on a bail hold of $51,500.
Highland Woods neighborhood to be evacuated during drill
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/29/2015 - 8:04amThursday will start off with a reverse 911 call for 270 South Lake Tahoe residents living in the Highland Woods neighborhood.
The neighborhood evacuation drill will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to test the city's emergency system. All visiting or living in the Highland Woods area that wish to participate will be evacuated to the end of Sierra Blvd at the snow dump area. A public information officer will be there along with the Red Cross and informational booths and displays. Snacks will be provided.

Before Starbucks opened in March of 1971, the only real choices for a cup of coffee were black, or with cream and/or sugar.

Extreme athlete Erik Roner dies in Squaw Valley skydiving accident
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/28/2015 - 8:31pmSky diver Erik Lars Roner, an MTV extreme athlete, was killed Monday when he flew into a tree during a charity golf event at Squaw Valley Monday morning, authorities said.
Roner, 39, of Tahoe City, Calif., was part of a team doing a performance for a charity golf tournament when he hit a tree and became entangled about 9:45 a.m., the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.
Roner was pronounced dead at the scene; all other skydivers landed safely, officials said.
The accident occurred at an annual golf fundraiser for the Squaw Valley Institute in Olympic Valley.
Homewood man faces charges of furnishing alcohol to minors
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/28/2015 - 7:30pmA man from Homewood, CA was arrested and cited on September 25, 2015 for allegedly furnishing alcoholic beverages to minors during the South Lake Tahoe Police Department's "Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation."
Mark Finlayson, 38, was approached by a minor under the direct supervision of a peace officer outside a store in the area of Emerald Bay Road and Lake Tahoe Blvd. The minor asked Finlayson to buy them alcohol, stating they were underage and couldn't purchase the alcohol by themselves.
Finlayson faces a minimum $1000 fine and 24 hours of community service.
Ribbon cutting ceremony for newest South Lake Tahoe bike path

The newest multi-use trail connecting Lake Tahoe Blvd and Highway 50 will officially open with a dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. on October 14.
District Five County Supervisor Sue Novasel, the communities of South Lake Tahoe and Meyers and the Transportation Division of the County of El Dorado's Community Development Agency invite all interested parties to a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the final connection of the Class 1 bicycle and multi-use path network connecting the communities of Meyers and South Lake Tahoe.
Local officers honored during National Thank a Police Officer Day

South Lake Tahoe local Daniella Flatau tried to encourage people to support law enforcement by organizing the local celebration of a day meant to show those sworn to protect the public that people support them, especially in a day and age where violence against the police is increasing daily.
Lake Tahoe road work schedule for September 27 - October 3

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

8th annual K-9 trials in South Lake Tahoe October 3

The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine (K9) Association (SLTPCA) will be hosting the 8th annual K9 Trials at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach on Saturday, October 3rd.
As a sanctioned Western States Police Canine Association event, it is expected to draw 45-50 canine teams throughout California.
The competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 3rd with the Field Search phase which tests the ability of the canine team to locate hidden suspects.
Two more cars stolen in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/26/2015 - 10:08pmAs reported last week, there were four stolen cars in South Lake Tahoe between September 10 and 15.
A 21-year-old transient Tarra Sheffield was arrested for stealing one of those cars. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said she had evidence to other stolen cars when arrested.
Anonymous tip leads South Lake Tahoe Police to person of interest in assault case
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/26/2015 - 9:24pmOn Thursday, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) released photos of a person of interest in a sexual assault case they were investigating. By the afternoon, they received an anonymous tip suggesting the identity of the man, and soon after, the unidentified man's lawyer contacted SLTPD to arrange a meeting.
The attorney indicated his client is willing to cooperate with this investigation. So far, there is not enough evidence to warrant an arrest and the case is still under investigation.
