Shawna Brekke-Read leaves City of South Lake Tahoe Director job
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 6:00pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe is now without their Development Services Director after Shawna Brekke-Read left the position in December.
Brekke-Read was in the position just over a year after leaving the Town of Moraga in 2014 where she served as their Planning Director.
Her husband Don, who is a middle school teacher, had stayed behind in the Bay Area after she accepted the new position. According to City of South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry, Brekke-Read wanted to move back to the Bay Area to be with her husband.
The City has started recruiting for the vacant position.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 4:11pmAfter just 17 months on the job, Douglas County Manager Jim Nichols is leaving his position. The Douglas County Board of Commissioners have announced that Nichols' employment relationship with the county is coming to an end.
Officially, a mutual separation agreement will be presented at the next Board of County Commissioner’s meeting on January 21, 2016. This meeting will be held at Stateline.
Rock comes down on Highway 50 near Wright's Lake
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 3:43pmThe boulder that fell into traffic lanes on Wednesday afternoon was 15 feet wide and weighed 20 tons.
UPDATE 6:30 p.m. - All pieces of the boulder that locked Highway 50 near the Wright's Lake turnoff have been removed and the road is open and free of controls around the rock, but chains or 4WD with snow tires are required from Meyers to three miles east of Kyburz.

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m. - Caltrans have blasted the rock and are now in the process of removing the pieces. At this time the road is still controlled traffic in one direction.

When I’m having a bad day, feeling like what we do doesn’t matter or just isn’t enough, I re read this story and it reminds me that as long as we keep trying and never give up we are making a difference. Barton Health is hosting an open enrollment working session on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
During this session, individuals can apply for health coverage and have access to certified representatives for any needed assistance. The deadline to sign up is January 31, 2016.
They are reminding people to bring their picture identification, social security number and household income to the enrollment session.
Remaining residents asked to move; Tahoe Beach Club ready to break ground
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2016 - 3:00pmThe remaining tenants at the Tahoe Shore Mobile Home Park at Stateline, Nev., have been given 90 days to find new housing now that owners of the Tahoe Beach Club will be breaking ground on a 20-acre luxury lakefront condominium project.
This announcement should come as no surprise to the people who own or rent the mobile homes since they were originally told in 2003 that they would have to move so the project could be built.
The Tahoe Beach Club has been 14 years in the making and now it looks like the first shovels will be moving dirt at the new lakeside development by June, 2016.
Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Wednesday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2016 - 11:39amThe National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada starting at 4 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2016.
The first storm in potentially a series of them is forecast to impact the area according to NWS in Reno. There is an additional chance for a storm late Thursday and again Saturday, but forecast confidence in these is lower.
Their forecast:
Today - Partly sunny, with a high near 45. Southwest wind around 5 mph.
Tonight - A 20 percent chance of rain after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. South wind 5 to 15 mph.

As with everything she did, Charlene handled the cancer and a subsequent stroke, with grace, courage, total resolve and of course her humor and her smile, once again being the hero in our family. Charlene and I met here in Tahoe 35 years ago and soon discovered that we had both grown up in Southern California about two miles apart.

Keith Urban announces tour stop at Harvey's Outdoor Arena

His RipCORD World Tour 2016 will feature Brett Eldredge, who toured with Urban as a special guest on his 2014 Raise ‘Em Up Tour.
Newcomer and critical darling Maren Morris will join the tour as this year’s special guest, and Urban promises it will be one heck of a time.
“We’ll be playing a lot of new music from RipCORD, all new production, new cities where we’ve never played … and Brett Eldredge and Maren Morris? It’s gonna be potent and unbridled,” Urban said in Monday’s (Jan 11) announcement of the tour.
City looking for Bicycle Advisory Committee members
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/11/2016 - 8:19pmThe South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority (JPA) is seeking applicants to fill the seven open positions on the Bicycle Advisory Committee, as required by Measure R.
Three of the open positions are for two-year terms, and the terms of the other four will expire in January, 2017 at which time four two-year terms will be open.
The Bicycle Advisory Committee expects to continue to have work until the year 2030. If a member of the committee one can expect monthly meetings during their term.

Missing Lake Tahoe skier rescued in same area as previous day SAR training
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/11/2016 - 3:30pmDouglas County Search and Resuce (DCSAR) spent Saturday doing technical training on the eastern slopes of the Carson Range. Heavenly Mountain Resort allowed the members to ride the Gondola and Tamarack chair before the resort opened to the public so that the training could focus on safely traveling down to the valley, as would be required on a real rescue.
They didn't have to wait long to use their finely tuned skills since they were called out to the resort on Sunday after a skier became lost in the same general area. DCSAR was able to safely locate and rescue the unidentified person.
El Dorado County Sheriff holding community town hall meetings

El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini has scheduled several town hall style meetings throughout the county and has invited to public to attend to discuss his new Sheriff facility in Placerville. The meetings by scheduled supervisorial districts in order to accommodate more people, though the South Lake Tahoe meeting will be held in Pollock Pines.
Three in custody in connection with fatal Carson City shooting
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/11/2016 - 8:22amUPDATE 2:00 p.m. - Three young adults were taken into custody Monday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of a young man over a marijuana deal near a park in north Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
The three — two men and a woman — were arrested without incident by Carson City SWAT at an apartment complex on Fifth Street near Harbin Street. The three came out following demands by SWAT to surrender after investigators learned they had been hiding inside a residence.

Weak systems aren't promising much snow to Lake Tahoe Basin

A weak storm will pass to the north on Monday and Tuesday with 20% chance of it leaving a little snow according to the National Weather Service.

Before Hwy 50 it was horses and wagons on the Johnson Cut-Off
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/09/2016 - 5:43pmThe trip is hot and dry. A layer of several feet of dust lined the route, flying around as the wheels of the wagons and hooves of the horses pass over. The road is steep and over granite along the 130 miles from the Carson Valley to Placerville. When not the middle of summer, the road is muddy or buried by snow. A horse could cover the terrain in 24-hours.
The road is Johnson's Cut-off and the year is 1852. It was built by John Calhoun "Cock-eye" Johnson as a way to cut off 50 miles and 2,000 feet in elevation from the common route people took over Donner Summit as they emigrated West.

El Nino making snow now, but climate change 'loads dice' for warmer future winters

But the long-term climate prognosis for the Sierra Nevada and the planet as a whole is more troubling with rising global temperatures threatening to make cold, snowy winters less likely in the future.
That was the message two climate scientists delivered Friday to an audience of meteorologists gathered for a conference at Lake Tahoe.

One month ago, Caldeira was at the Paris Climate Conference, COP21, and shared that experience and discussion with national meteorologists and interested locals gathered at OSS.
While most of us are concerned with our short-term local weather, Caldeira researches the long term, and long scale climate changes.
Prescribed fire operations return next week after holiday break

They will be concentrating on six areas (matching with letters on the attached map):

The South Tahoe High School Performing Arts Booster Association (PABA) is holding their annual gala on Friday, January 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., prior to the evening's performance of Cinderella.
Despite its name, this is a dress-as-you-please event in the school's Student Union which will feature a photo booth complete with a glass slipper and a silent auction. There will be refreshments made by the STHS culinary students. The whole evening promises to be fun for the whole family.

STHS Resource Officer Andy Eissinger talks drugs, social media and theft
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/07/2016 - 9:05pmSouth Lake Tahoe Police Officer Andy Eissinger is enjoying his new job as the Resource Officer at South Tahoe High, having moved into the position when Aaron Crawford retired at the end of the 2014-15 school year.
Eissinger said the first five months on the job have gone well and have been a nice break from being on patrol for the City the last eight years. He spends all eight hours of the day on the campus, interacting with students and dealing with issues that come up on a daily basis.
South Lake Tahoe's Beth Tschantre tries out for American Idol

The 25-year-old from South Lake Tahoe will make her American Idol debut on Thursday night's show when the San Francisco auditions are highlighted. The show is on FOX from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tschantre can't say much about what happens as she's bound by a confidentiality agreement, but she can say her segment starts tonight and goes into next week.
Recent storms leave behind fresh powder at Lake Tahoe ski resorts

The National Weather Service in Reno said little additional snow is expected through Friday but another series of weak to moderate storm systems is likely to bring more snow to the Sierra from Saturday through the middle of next week.

Tendons are bands of fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to the bones. Micro tears in the tendon can lead to irritation and inflammation known as tendonitis. If the area is not well rested or treated, the tendon starts to degenerate and can turn into unhealthy scar tissue that does not perform or move well.

Research & Desire: Recent Videos and Paintings by Cynthia Hooper opens Thursday, Jan. 14, with an Artist’s Reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Haldan Gallery. Now it appears the project, also known as the Loop Road, is on the back straightaway, approaching the final turn and homestretch.
New superintendent selected for El Dorado County Schools

Dr. Ed Manansala became the new superintendent Tuesday, moving up from his position as Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services, one he'd held since June of 2013.

Eighteen years since Sonny Bono died while skiing in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/05/2016 - 11:35pmIt has been 18 years since Sonny Bono, a California congressman and entertainer who had performed at Lake Tahoe, died in a skiing accident at Heavenly Mountain Resort.
Bono was 62 when he set out skiing on that Monday morning, January 5, 1998. He was first reported missing at 4:30 p.m. In hopes that he left the mountain without telling anyone, Bono was paged in each of the Stateline casinos.
Man arrested in Hawaii after burglary spree from El Dorado County to San Luis Obispo
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/05/2016 - 10:49pmA Bay Area man was arrested on New Year's Eve after he got off an airplane in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Tyrone Brennen is the suspect in two El Dorado County burglaries, one in Cool and the other in Coloma.
Numerous agencies were involved in the collaborative investigation that resulted in Brennen's arrest. Besides El Dorado County, he is also suspected of burglaries in Placer, Nevada and San Luis Obispo counties.
Brennen is being transported to San Luis Obispo where he faces the first charge of burglary.
Conner vs. City of South Lake Tahoe could cost $100,000

Pet of the Week: Chester
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/05/2016 - 6:05pmThe "Pet of the Week" is Chester, a five-month old Fila Mastiff / Pit Bull mix. He is going to be a BIG dog!
Chester needs a family without children under 12 who is committed to taking him to training classes. He loves to play with other dogs and did not chase the cats that he met at Animal Control.

Chains controls around Lake Tahoe as storm passes through
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/05/2016 - 1:37pm3:00 p.m. update 1/5/16: Well, the storm had another surge and chain controls are back up over Echo from three miles east of Kyburz to Meyers and on 80 from one mile east of Baxter to the Donner Lake interchange.
220 p.m. update 1/5/16: Chain controls over Echo Summit (Hwy 50) and Donner Pass (I80) have been lifted.

Chain controls have been up through the Sierra Nevada for most of the day as snows passes over the region.
Tahoe Chamber looking for ambassadors for the new year

Applications for the 2016 Chamber Ambassador Program are currently being accepted through January 15.
Ambassadors are a group of professionals that assist and interact with other chamber members on a variety of levels. There are now over 650 members in the organization.
