Search and Rescue locates out of bounds snowboarder near Cold Creek
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/28/2015 - 3:52pmSearch and Rescue volunteers from El Dorado County recently responded to a report of an out-of-bounds snowboarder from Heavenly who ended up near the Montgomery Estates neighborhood. Twelve volunteers on skis, snowmobiles and snowshoes made their way about four miles into the wilderness before locating 41 year-old Pavel Kletsov.
On Friday, December 11, Kletsov left the boundaries of Heavenly Valley Ski Resort and ended up in the Cold Creek Drainage, just above Montgomery Estates. Due to the fresh new snow and terrain he got stuck and could not get out on his own.

Upper Truckee Marsh to be restored
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/27/2015 - 9:39pmAfter decades of planning, analysis, and public input, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board recently approved the final plan to restore the largest remaining wetland in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Upper Truckee River and Marsh Restoration Project will restore over 500 acres of highly disturbed wetland habitat, improving the natural filtration capacity of the Marsh and reducing a major source of fine sediment that clouds Tahoe’s famed lake clarity.
Chemicals linked with severe respiratory disease found in common e-cigarette flavors
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/27/2015 - 6:28pmDiacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake.
Road to SnowGlobe: Three days of music for concertgoers and neighbors

Thousands of people will be on hand December 27 through 31 to experience what is being billed as a fusion between music festival, winter expedition and New Year's Eve celebration.
Also promised is cold, with night time temperatures in the low teens. Appropriate clothing and outerwear is strongly encouraged.

Cold temperatures and some snow in forecast for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/27/2015 - 9:16amThere is a fast moving low pressure system headed to the Sierra Nevada late Sunday. It is a cold system without much moisture. Up to an inch of snow in the lower elevations, though some weather models show 2 to 4 inches with up to 6 inches at the higher elevations.

Disneyland to close attractions to make way for new Star Wars land

In January, 10 attractions and eateries will close — some temporarily, some permanently — only a few months after the resort hiked the price of annual passes as much as 31%. This spring, Disneyland's biggest rival, Universal Studios Hollywood, plans to unveil a widely anticipated Harry Potter attraction.
Local children treated to gifts and banquet by Tahoe Douglas Rotary

On the guest list were families from both Live Violence Free and Sierra Child and Family Services. Thirty families and 80 children enjoyed an afternoon of food, entertainment, a visit from Santa and gifts.

Snowfall totals in South Lake Tahoe already surpass winter of 2014

As of Christmas Day, 2015, all South Lake Tahoe ski resorts are reporting more snow than they had during the whole 2014 ski season.
Heavenly Valley - 167" of snow in November and December, to date; 87" last season.
Sierra-at-Tahoe - 173" reported, 120" last season.
Kirkwood - 194" reported, 188" last season.
Tornado touched down in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/25/2015 - 2:22pmA tornado warning for parts of El Dorado and Amador counties has been lifted, but the National Weather Service reports that a tornado did touch down in El Dorado Hills near Folsom Lake and in Cameron Park.
Eric Kurth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the tornado touched down in the Browns Ravine area and damage was reported in the area of Hill View Hidden Acres and Mormon Island drives, south of Green Valley Road, in El Dorado Hills about 3 p.m. and moved eastward also touching down in Cameron Park.

Randy Brooks, 67, a song writer and son of a church organist, told Reuters Wednesday he may not have left his mark on pop culture had it not been for car trouble in Lake Tahoe.

If you are traveling you can expect road controls from chains or snow tire requirements to chains or 4WD with snow tires.
Track Santa with NORAD on Christmas Eve

Whether you made the Naughty or Nice list, you can track Santa Claus as he goes around the world, delivering presents on Christmas Eve thanks to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The tradition began in 1955 after a Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement in Colorado Springs, Colorado, misprinted the telephone number for children to call Santa. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through operations hotline for the commander of the Continental Air Defense Command.

On a monthly basis, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate hosting a dinner and sending a sponsor volunteer crew to work with the B&B volunteers to provide a hot, nutritious meal and “giveaway” bags to South Tahoe Community members dealing with food insecurity.
Pilots blinded by Christmas laser light display in Reno

The goal is to help the community by providing vital blood as a resource within our community and also provide coats to children in need. We encounter children on calls often who could benefit from a coat donation and hope to make a difference with this.

Series of earthquakes in Reno Tuesday evening
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2015 - 11:33pmResidents of the Reno area have reported feeling several earthquakes Tuesday night from South Reno to Northwest Reno. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory is reporting 11 earthquakes, most with an epicenter about 3.5 miles north of Galena High School and five with a magnitude above or equal to 3.0.
The largest earthquake has been upgraded to a 4.4, an increase from the original 3.4 according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Magnitudes and exact locations may be changed once analysis is completed.
Fire Chief with history of alcohol problems resigns after DUI arrest
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2015 - 8:42pmGarden Valley Fire Chief William Dekker resigned today after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).
On December 18, at about 1:50 p.m., El Dorado County sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a neighbor dispute in the town of Greenwood, 17 miles north of Placerville. The person who called 911 said his neighbor, Dekker, had threatened to shoot him during a dispute over a loose dog, according to a statement released by the Sheriff's department.
Mt. Tallac students create rap song to help Christmas Cheer

What the community may not be aware of is how students at Mt. Tallac High School came to help the non-profit agency this Christmas season.
Bob Lear, a board member of Christmas Cheer, approached Mt. Tallac Principal Holly Greenough when he was concerned of how the agency would be able to supply all they need to the community after the loss of one of their big donors.
Opinion: Lake Valley Fire wants ambulances staffed by firefighters

As our motto states, it is “Because We Care “. Driven by these guiding principles, in 2001 the LVFPD entered into a partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe to provide fire based ambulance transportation and advanced life support paramedic services throughout the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.
Winter mountain travel requires caution and preparedness
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2015 - 5:15pmThe holiday travel week may not have started out as many hoped it would as a storm hit Lake Tahoe on Monday, stranding many travelers for hours. I was one of those stranded between Kyburz and South Lake Tahoe on Highway 50, making the 1.5 hour drive from Cameron Park in 8.5 hours.
This caught me off guard since I've been driving the mountain roads for the past 36 years and my four-wheel drive car with snow tires has been very steady and dependable. I normally don't drive the mountain passes when a storm is headed our way, but I had to pick my daughter up from the San Francisco Airport.

Last minute gift idea offered by City of South Lake Tahoe

The book is titled “A Small Town with a Big View” and is available for purchase at City Hall located at 1901 Airport Road. The cost of the book is $25.00 and they accept checks and cash, no credit cards.
The chapters of the book include; A City is Born, Laying the Foundation, Getting Creative, Welcome to South Lake Tahoe, Collaboration is Key, A Vision Realized, and Looking to the Future.
Storm brings much needed water to Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2015 - 10:36amLake Tahoe rose almost two inches yesterday which equals 63.9 billion gallons of added water.
The National Weather Service in Reno has provided this chart on how much water actually was in yesterday's storm. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, they report the lake rose 1.92 inches and more precipitation is expected today and Thursday.
All waterways through El Dorado County were rising on Monday, prompting local flood warnings which have now expired. Placerville received 3.08 inches of rain in this storm ad they are now at 97% of average for season to date totals.

9:20 a.m. Update: Both Sierra and Kirkwood are closed and Heavenly has open: Boulder and Stagecoach in Nevada. The Tram, Gunbarrel, Patsy's, Groove, First Ride, and Powderbowl Express in California. They are evaluating all lift operations this morning due to wind. The Gondola is on wind hold as of 9:20 am.
Deputies arrest pair of Grinches who stole holiday gifts
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2015 - 12:43amhe Washoe County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men today on charges of stealing gifts from generous citizens in the Galena Forest area. The two men have been identified as Sean Madigan, 51, and his son, Depaul Madigan, 22, both of Reno. They are accused of taking Christmas gifts homeowners generously left as a ‘thank you’ for waste services employees.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the theft when several alert citizens called to report the suspicious activity. The homeowners were able to provide a vehicle description and a description of the subjects involved.
iPhones stolen in Douglas County burglary

This intriguing book is a memoir of his time with the U.S. Forest Service at Lake Tahoe and, later, of his experiences as Executive Director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during one of the most tumultuous times in that Agency's existence. It has been said that Morgan's ideas resolved many of the long standing issues at Tahoe and led eventually to a spirit of cooperation among the various interest groups that survives to this day.

String of storms heading to Lake Tahoe this week
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/20/2015 - 3:56pmA winter storm warning has been issued for the Lake Tahoe basin from 10 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Periods of heavy snow will begin Monday morning with accumulations 18"-36" above 7,000 feet. Snow accumulations below 7,000 feet will vary with 4"-12" expected. Snow levels will start at 6,000 feet Monday morning, rising to 7,000 feet by the Tuesday morning. The heavier precipitation is expected Tuesday.
The incoming storm will have winds with it as well, 10-25 mph with gusts to 40 mph in the morning Monday, tapering down by afternoon.

Designed by PR Entertainment, the $1 million complex features 107-seats, a separate dining area serving authentic Italian cuisine, bar and upscale lounge, all on the top floor of Heavenly Village above the movie theater.
Magic and illusion fans will appreciate "Magic Fusion," The Loft's show staring Tony Clark, winner of the coveted Magician of the Year award and numerous television appearances.
South Lake Tahoe community takes care of each other during holidays

Here are some of the many Santas who've been busy at work:
The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose filled up 40 boxes with hams and food for families at Tahoe Valley Elementary school. The students decorated the boxes.

Douglas County Search and Rescue locates missing skier
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/19/2015 - 9:30pmUpdate: A South Lake Tahoe man, 28 year old Nicholas Bridges, ducked under the out of bound ropes and skied out of bounds at Heavenly Ski Resort on December 19.
At 4:33 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a call that Bridges' friend couldn't find him after trying to find for over two hours.
Members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team began a coordinated search of the potential area. At approximately 8:10 p.m., Bridges was able to call dispatch and alert them as to his wearabouts.
Bridges was issued a citation for skiing out of bounds.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2015 - 10:33pmIn a move that will save the city money as well as increase staffing, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue added 12 new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) specialists to their staff on December 14.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is now the only fire department in the Tahoe basin to have three firefighters on each engine at all times and two EMS specialists in the ambulance.
Polar Express with 240 passengers breaks down in Lyon County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2015 - 9:51pmPDATE 10:15PM: Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrived at the disabled Polar Express train and passengers are now being taken off the railroad cars to meet up with JAC and Virginia City shuttle buses, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
"There's lots of kids, lots of adults and they are in good spirits," said McDaniel of the effort. The diesel train stalled after 8 p.m. north of Linehan Road in Lyon County. No injuries were reported. There's upwards of 240 passengers on the train.
