Lake Tahoe road work schedule for November 29 - December 4

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work continues on a $36 million project to increase the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance will be increased on seven structures by lifting the existing bridge deck and the other two will have the roadway below dug down. The family-friendly festival runs from December 2 through December 6 at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa. This year, all proceeds will support prevention programs and trauma services for Barton Hospital’s Level III Trauma Center.
Fernley man arrested for string of burglaries; WCSO offers home safety tips
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/28/2015 - 9:08amWashoe County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a burglary suspect in Caughlin Ranch early this morning after the suspect attempted to elude deputies who were investigating a series of home and vehicle burglaries.
At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2015, deputies responded to the area of Longknife Road and Caughlin Parkway on a report of a vehicle burglary that had just occurred. Deputies canvassed the area and identified two burglarized vehicles. Deputies also discovered that the suspect had used garage door openers to enter and burglarize the residences.

Fatal crash at Highway 88 and Mottsville in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 9:01pmGARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Emergency crews responded to the scene of a fatal traffic accident at Highway 88 and Mottsville that occurred at 6:28 p.m. Friday.
One person was killed and four people were injured in the accident, which was reported at 6:28 p.m., according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Duncan Dauber. It was the second serious crash at the intersection Friday.
Three vehicles — a red Ford Taurus, a silver BMW and a white Honda SUV — were involved in the accident.
Ask Hopeful Henry: Should I give my dog bones?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 8:37pmThis week we had a request for help from a family whose 10 month old German Shepard got his muzzle stuck in a knuckle bone purchased from a pet store. He had eaten out the center of the bone and the bone became lodged onto his jaw. After the owner tried for an hour to remove the bone it became apparent that an emergency vet appointment was need. The bone had broken his tooth and was causing extreme pain. Alpine Animal Hospital was nice enough to squeeze them in right away and was able to remove the bone with a minor surgery.
Increased law enforcement for Click-it or Ticket campaign in Nevada

Douglas County deputies get specialized training
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 7:45pmSheriff Ron Pierini recently announced the graduation of two Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies from the State of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Law Enforcement Academy.
Douglas County Deputies Matthew Sampson and Steven Kimbrell graduated from the academy on Thursday, November 19, 2015, after attending the academy for four months. The P.O.S.T. academy is located at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility, in Carson City, Nev.
Alumnus returns to the South Tahoe High gym to attempt his 500th career win

Drew Hibbs lead the South Tahoe High basketball team back then, and now he is returning to his old stomping grounds as the coach of two-time California State basketball champion Foothill High School Mustangs, the Sacramento Bee Coach of the Decade, and a coach looking for his 400th career win.

(nee Bitzel) Sheehan; loving brother of Kerry DiBiagio and her husband Mark; cherished uncle of Molly and Anthony DiBiagio. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Prescribed burns to continue in Lake Tahoe basin next week
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 9:52amNorth Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue widespread prescribed fire operations beginning the week of November 30, 2015.
Operations are planned for the following areas:
57 acres on urban lots on the west side of Incline Village. Smoke expected to travel North/Northeast/East.
28 acres off Fairway Drive near Tahoe City. Smoke expected to travel North/Northeast/East.
105 acres in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park north of Spooner Lake. Smoked expected to travel Northeast.

Reno man dies in single car accident on Kingsbury Grade
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/26/2015 - 10:25amA 52-year-old Reno man died Wednesday night in a single vehicle accident on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said.
The victim was driving a Budget truck westbound when, for an undetermined reason, the vehicle went off the side of the road, hitting a wall. The crash is being investigated as a possible medical issue, said Trooper Dan Lopez.
Traffic was reduced to a single lane in both directions as part of the crash investigation.

El Dorado County schools chief gets $125,000 to resign after two DUI arrests
Submitted by admin on Wed, 11/25/2015 - 8:20pmEl Dorado County schools chief Jeremy Meyers received a $125,000 buyout package this month for resigning after being arrested twice on suspicion of drunken driving.
In exchange for stepping down Nov. 14, Meyers will receive a lump sum payment equal to his salary through June 2016 – $114,821 – minus taxes and other withholding items, according to a copy of the agreement obtained late Monday through a Public Records Act request. The El Dorado County Office of Education also will pay Meyers a lump sum of $10,930, equal to his medical, dental and life insurance benefits through June.
Plan for heavy traffic during Thanksgiving holiday

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) advises motorists that experts are predicting a slight increase in all methods of travel nationwide, with about 47 million people traveling either by car or airplane for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Man jailed in South Lake Tahoe last year arrested in SF for alleged child abduction
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/25/2015 - 6:57pmA man arrested in South Lake Tahoe one year ago has been charged in last week's attempted kidnapping of a toddler who was riding on a MUNI bus in San Francisco with his mother.
On November 17, 2015, 45-year-old Sudesh Singh allegedly grabbed the one-year-old boy as his mother was waiting on a bus for a transfer slip. Singh ran onto the bus and took the child, put him into his arms and ran away, according to officials.
The mother chased after them and freed the screaming toddler from Singh, who was a stranger to both of them, police said.
South Lake Tahoe Police looking for man who robbed teenager
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/25/2015 - 3:54pmA 16-year-old South Lake Tahoe boy was walking on the bike path behind the Motel 6 on Monday, November 23 when he was robbed by a man who came out of the bushes. The teen was on the path at 1:30 p.m. when the suspect had his hand in his trench coat pocket, simulating a gun, and pointed it at the boy. The suspect demanded money and the young victim, who believed the man had a gun, gave him what he had. The teen was unharmed in the incident.
The unidentified suspect left the area on foot.
The victim described the suspect as:
-White male adult, between 6’00’’ and 6’03’’

$17M Indian tribe construction scheme involved condo in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/25/2015 - 9:38amDarrell Hinz was the trusted construction manager hired by the United Auburn Indian Community to complete its Indian Hills Road office project.
Instead, Hinz became enmeshed in a fraud scheme that federal investigators determined would ultimately suck $17 million out of the project in fraudulently inflated invoices.
The money ended up paying for luxuries that included a $70,000 BMW, a condo in South Lake Tahoe and a new swimming pool.
Snow in Lake Tahoe forecast for the next week
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/25/2015 - 8:47amSki resorts, local businesses, visitors and residents welcomed several inches of snow during Tuesday's storm, lending hope that the winter will be a good one for both outdoor sports and the South Lake Tahoe economy.
Heavenly Mountain Resort is reports 8" of new snow and they will have almost half of their runs open Wednesday. Sierra-at-Tahoe received 9" at the base, 10" at the summit and will have five lifts and 13 trails open. Over at Kirkwood, they received 16" of new snow and have four of their 15 lifts open.

Talking turkey: Fabulous brine and a unique barbecue twist

That was, until I watched Emeril Lagasse on Good Morning America about ten year ago. Now, its all about the brine!
The first year I tried the brine I had the recipe all written out and followed it closely, but since then I improvise with whatever is in the kitchen cupboards.
Since this is Tuesday there is still time to do a brine, but you need to hurry.

Several Lake Tahoe skiers named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/24/2015 - 2:03pmSeveral skiers from the Lake Tahoe area were announced to the 2015/16 US Alpine Ski Team, including Olympians Julia Mancuso, Travis Ganong, Tim Jitloff and Marco Sullivan. Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/24/2015 - 1:16pmPresident Obama established "Every Kid in a Park," a program which gives free entry to all USFS parks in the country to all fourth grade students.
In Lake Tahoe, all students signed up for the program also get a free Christmas Tree permit from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit as supplies last.
Fourth graders need to present the paper voucher or Every Kid in a Park pass at the USFS office located at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe.
Holiday storm reaches Lake Tahoe

The attached photo is from the Caltrans camera located at Twin Bridges at 12:30 p.m., giving people an idea of what is on the way.
As of 12:30 p.m. on November 24, the following road controls are in place:
From Meyers to 3 miles east of Kyburz on Highway 50, chains are required on all vehicles except or 4WD with snow tires.
Northbound on Hwy 89 from north of Camp Richardson along the west shore to Truckee, Chains are required except on 4WD with snow tires.

Help shape the details of South Lake Tahoe Highway 50 project

The Loop Road project in South Lake Tahoe has undergone changes, from being a federally funded project to realign Highway 50 to evolving into a community development project that promises to beautify, provide new gateways and gathering places. Without this plan being a federal project allows local control and development.
The revamped US Highway 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project will be presented to the community during an open house on Tuesday, December 1 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

More than 647 employees in 35 departments participated in a fundraising drive for the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room. Employees and physicians raised $2,040 in funds and donated more than 3,000 items – approximately $8,000 in value – totally more than $10,000 in donations.

The project ensures that every child in our community who needs one receives a coat at no charge. The Kiwanis Community Organization, Inc., a 501 c3 non-profit, was established as a collaboration in our community for numerous service organizations to work together on projects such as Coats For Kids, that align with their common missions of supporting the youth and families of our community.
Winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe; 4" - 8" of snow at lake level

They have put in a Winter Storm Warning from noon Tuesday, November 24 to 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Since the storm is coming from the north, forecasters expect snow to hit Washoe County by 10 a.m. and South Lake Tahoe by 12:00 p.m.
Holiday travelers can expect roads to be impacted with heavy snow Tuesday afternoon and evening, and slick roads on Wednesday.
A high wind warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Monday until noon on Tuesday, prior to the snow falling.
Processed marijuana stolen during El Dorado County home invasion robbery
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/23/2015 - 6:38pm11/24/15 update: The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office arrested both Ross and Stone on warrants issued by El Dorado County. When contacted, both Ross and Stone were armed with loaded firearms. They were taken into custody without incident and some of the stolen property from the Greenwood robbery was recovered. Ross and Stone were booked into the Sacramento County Jail on weapons and drug charges. They were also booked on warrants from El Dorado County. They are both in custody at the Sacramento County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.

She would be best in a home with no other female dogs and no cats.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after pulling knife on grandmother
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/23/2015 - 12:43pmA man is behind bars on suspicion of pulling a knife on his grandmother and threatening to kill her on Friday night in South Lake Tahoe.
On November 20, 2015, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to a home on Candlewood Drive at 11:35 p.m. A 73-year-old woman had gone to a neighbor's house where she called 911 after her grandson, 30-year-old Jesse Shane Gage, displayed a large knife and threatened to kill her.
Gage, who lives with his grandmother, was arrested and charged with terrorizing, trying to harm an elderly person and exhibiting a deadly weapon.

Uncertain path of this week's incoming storm in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/22/2015 - 10:36amThe path of the next storm headed to the Lake Tahoe area is still uncertain and weather experts are keeping a close eye on the situation to keep drivers informed during one of the most heavily traveled holidays. The National Weather Service is advising motorists to be informed as snow totals are still uncertain.
The National Weather Service warning: There are uncertainties with the exact tract of a strong winter storm heading into the Sierra. The storm will drop south-southeast into Eastern California and Western Nevada Tuesday, then linger through the remainder of the week.

Whittell football wraps up season as #2 in Nevada
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/21/2015 - 8:39pmDayton was the scene of the NIAA Division IV State Football Championships between Whittell High School, number one team from the north, against the south's best, Pahranagat Valley.
Whittell had dominated the north all season, taking an 11-0 record into the final game of the year. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Pahranagat Valley won the game 54-28.
Pahranagat Valley's 93 game winning streak is now the best in the country for 8-man teams.
Both teams were undefeated during the regular season.

After spending time on the serving line dishing out generous portions of chili and pizza, he took a moment to jot down his views on his time spent at Kirkwood’s “Adopt A Day” dinner. “The opportunity to directly give back to the local community is extremely rewarding,” he wrote. “The appreciation of those who are in need can be seen in their smiling faces.”
Father in custody after four-year-old boy ingests meth
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/21/2015 - 6:39pmA 4-year-old Carson City boy was hospitalized Friday night after ingesting methamphetamine that allegedly belonged to the boy's father who is now custody on suspicion of child endangerment, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
Taken into custody was Pedro Montanez, 27, on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of trafficking levels of a controlled substance.
Gas explosion damages two vehicles, interrupts traffic in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/21/2015 - 6:30pmAn apparent gas main leak at the entrance to the Sunridge subdivision caused an explosion that damaged two vehicles and disrupted traffic on Highway 395 and Mica Drive in Douglas County.
Southbound 395 and westbound Mica Drive now open and moving normally. Northbound 395 is being rerouted via South Sunridge and North Sundridge drives.
A resident who lives nearby, Rick Dodds, a retired Carson City Sheriff deputy, said he witnessed the explosion, and saw it blow dirt and rocks about 100 feet into the air. He said it appeared to have damaged a wall on the property.
Prescribed burns continue in Lake Tahoe basin again this week
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/20/2015 - 10:32pmNorth Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts will continue prescribed fire operations around Incline Village, Kingsbury Grade and Van Sickle Bi-State Park through next week as weather and conditions allow.
On the west side on Incline Village, crews will be burning 77 acres of hand piles starting Monday, November 23.
35 acres on Park Cattle property near Van Sickle Bi-State Park were ignited Wednesday and will continue as conditions allow.
Valhalla annual Holiday Faire this weekend

The annual Valhalla Holiday Faire will be held at the Tallac Historic Site this weekend, inside the Valhalla Grand Hall. This is an annual holiday tradition for many, who head out to the hall to see local artists, craftspeople, Santa Claus, choirs and musical groups.
After the grand opening Friday night, the faire continues on Saturday, November 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, November 22 the hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Several reports of mail theft in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/20/2015 - 9:11pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of stolen mail from mailboxes in the Topaz Ranch Estates and Gardnerville Ranchos areas.
"Citizens should attempt to collect the mail as soon as possible after the mail delivery has been made or consider a lockable mail box," said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks. "Additionally, outgoing mail should be placed in a secured US Postal mailbox if possible."
With the upcoming holidays, packages and items being delivered to the door step should be collected as soon as possible or arrangements for another delivery location should be made.
