Driver inattention at crosswalks and intersections focus of increased enforcement
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/07/2015 - 5:38pmDouglas County Sheriff's Deputies will be focusing on traffic enforcement at intersections and crosswalks, looking for red light and stop sign violations, pedestrian violations, speeders and distracted drivers throughout the county from June 8 through June 21.
Key factors in many of the recent fatal highway traffic accidents have been driver inattention and failure to yield to pedestrians. Deputies will continue to enforce all traffic violations on all roadways throughout the county but these violations in particular will be targeted and enforced. Citations will be issued to violators.

The Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee (LTFAC) is scheduled to meet from 9 a.m. to noon, June 22, 2015, at the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Forest Supervisor’s office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96150. LTFAC will address issues related to federal activities at Lake Tahoe.
Items on the agenda include an overview of committee history, review of committee charter, update on status of Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, and discussion of Committee’s future strategy.

South Tahoe High wrestler wins at Fresno tournament

On Saturday, June 6, Herrera took first place in the 192-pound division at the California USA Wrestling tournament in Fresno.
The young South Lake Tahoe wrestler took third in the 170 pound division during February's state tournament.
Sheriff's OHV team making Rubicon Trail safer for Jeepers

The mission of the team is to provide education to the public, maintain the family friendly atmosphere and when necessary, use enforcement to support that education. In its fifteenth year on the Rubicon Trail, the OHV team is again helmed by Sergeant Bryan Brown and staffed with one full-time seasonal deputy and eight part-time deputies who work the OHV team, in addition to their usual duties.

One can now navigate through the district site and land on each school's web page, visit departments, school programs, accountability report cards as well as community news and resources.

3,500 cyclists will take part in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride

All 3,500 spots have been filled by riders participating in the 72-mile around the lake ride, the 100-mile Century ride and the 35-mile fun ride which includes a boat cruise.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire District and Skyland Fire Adapted Community will execute an inter-agency wildfire evacuation drill on Monday, June 8, 2015 between the hours of 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The drill will simulate a real evacuation event to give residents the opportunity to practice evacuating from their homes and getting to the designated safe zone. Situations which could cause a neighborhood evacuation would be a wildfire, earthquake, hazardous spill or some other catastrophic event.

On Saturday, June 6, e-waste will be collected by Electronic Waste Management at both the South Tahoe Middle School and during Clean Tahoe Day at South Tahoe Refuse. The company will be at the school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at the dump from 8 a.m. to p.m.
On Sunday, June 7 the company will take collections from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.

June 10, 2015 - 6:30pm Chautauqua performer Steve Hale will present “George Whittell, Jr." who lived off the interest generated by the millions he inherited from his parents. His enormous assets allowed him to purchase the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe where he built the Thunderbird Lodge in the 1930s. The house was designed by prominent Reno architect Frederick DeLongchamps. This included a six-hundred-foot tunnel connected to a boat house to berth the “Thunderbird”, his fifty-five-foot mahogany yacht.

Three of the community's founding members, Laurel Ames, Betty Mitchell and John Cefalu will share their experiences back in the early 1960s.
South Lake Tahoe was the second city formed in El Dorado County's history.
The Fireside Chat will be held on Wednesday, June 10 beginning at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 1901 Airport Rd.

Suspect dies after being arrested in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/04/2015 - 8:13amA man died early Thursday morning after being arrested by El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies in Pollock Pines.
At 4:30 a.m. this morning, deputies responded to a suspicious man who was sitting in a vehicle not belonging to him in the 6000 block of Pony Express Trail.
The man, a white male in his 60s, was uncooperative with deputies as they attempted to arrest him. He then started having medical issues and emergency personnel were called to the scene. The man was transported to Marshall Hospital where he died.
Thunderstorms expected in South Lake Tahoe Thursday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/03/2015 - 9:26pmThe National Weather Service is calling for widespread thunderstorms throughout the Sierra and western Nevada for the next several days. On Thursday, June 4 there is an 80% chance of rain in South Lake Tahoe with a rainfall total of .16 inch.
Chances of rain and thunderstorms continue through the weekend and into next week. On Friday, rainfall total of .14" is forecast, .23" on Saturday and a trace on Sunday.
The best chances for strong thunderstorms will be in and along the Sierra. Storms may start early in the morning with the strongest storms expected during the early afternoon.

This annual series of live music takes place every Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging has a limited supply of Senior Farmers’ Market check booklets available for qualified El Dorado County Seniors. Each eligible senior will receive one booklet that includes ten checks redeemable for $2 each to be used at Certified Farmers’ Markets for the purchase of fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and raw unprocessed honey.

Several month ago the band, famous for such hits as "I Want to Know What Love Is,""Feels Like the First Time," "Cold as Ice," and "Hot Blooded," contacted Dave Davis of MontBleu about their desire to have a local choir join them on stage during their South Shore show.
Davis contacted Paul Kushner, the Blue Ribbon Choir director, to see if his group would be interested.
He said "yes!"
Woman dies in Highway 50 accident near Glenbrook

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is investigating the fatal accident which happened just after 8:30 a.m. June 3 on Highway 50 between Cave Rock and Glenbrook.
For unknown reasons, the woman, who was traveling north, went off the road, down a short embankment where the vehicle ran into rocks. She was traveling with her dog. Both the woman and the dog were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ordinance protects health and safety of long term motel renters
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/02/2015 - 10:03pmIn order to ensure motels and hotels being used as long term housing were kept decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable, the City of South Lake Tahoe has created a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) ordinance. At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the first reading received unanimous approval and support.
The ordinance gives the lodging community guidelines to follow if renting out units more than 30 days.
Safe and habitable units will be made available within the next twelve months once the design and maintenance standards are approved at the next council meeting June 16.
County responds to search warrant served at Tahoe Wellness Cooperative

Staff from eight agencies spent hours at the South Lake Tahoe medical marijuana dispensary, pulling out boxes and containers of cannabis and records.
Community and Council looking forward to Tahoe Valley Area Plan

In the first reading to adopt the three resolutions which make up the plan, Mayor Hal Cole and the City Council thanked everyone who was part of the long process to start shaping things up at the "Y". "This plan will have an impact for years to come," said Cole.
South Lake Tahoe man sentenced after 100 mph motorcycle ride

Peter Thomas Hall, 50, of South Lake Tahoe, appeared in custody before East Fork Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins.

Paul was born in Dixon, Illinois in 1931, the son of Paul J. and Lauretta M. Fry, is preceded in death by his wife, Dee, of 53 years and is survived by his six children, twenty three grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Upon graduating from Notre Dame, Paul attended Medical School at the University of Illinois; he served his internship at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital and did Residency Training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Judge: ‘Cyber stalking’ evidenced in Tahoe bear case

Richard and Adrienne Evans failed to prove the Bear League intentionally interfered with the relationship between Adrienne and her professional mountain bike racing sponsors and that claim in the couple’s lawsuit is dismissed, Washoe District Judge Lidia Stiglich ruled May 27.

Volunteers can meet at one of four locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around our bike paths. Weekly farmers markets in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/02/2015 - 6:52amRows of fresh fruit, vegetables, coffee, food, flowers and local goods including soap and books will be featured at the South Lake Tahoe Farmers' Markets on Tuesdays all summer.
The Tuesday market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is operated by El Dorado County Farmers' Markets and is held at the American Legion located at 2732 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Cooler temperatures; Chance of showers at end of week

The seven day forecast for South Lake Tahoe according to weather.gov:
Tuesday - Sunny, with a high near 68. Light southwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.
Tuesday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 39. West wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light in the evening.
Wednesday - Sunny, with a high near 68. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.
Lake Tahoe casino employee suspected of $10,000 theft
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/01/2015 - 10:02pmA Lake Tahoe casino employee has been arrested on suspicion of theft after police said he made off with a bundle of $100 bills totaling $10,000 that had been accidentally dropped by a gambler.
Douglas County sheriff's deputies say the gambler had won $70,000 and was walking to an elevator from the Harrah's Tahoe casino floor when he dropped the wad of cash early Wednesday.
Contract janitorial worker Richard Ferrer. 36, is accused of sweeping the money into a dustpan, then heading to the employee break room.
City staff and locals help kick off the Tahoe Bike Challenge

Pearl Izumi at the Y hosted the "Ready, Set, Pedal" party with swag bags, food and special discounts. Riders gathered at the store and started on either a 5 mile or a 10 mile loop.
Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and owner's home raided Monday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/01/2015 - 7:33pmA large team made up of members from multiple agencies served a search warrant on both the Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and owner Cody Bass's South Lake Tahoe home early Monday morning.
Agents from the Franchise Tax Board (FTB), Board of Equalization, Department of Insurance, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and El Dorado County Sheriff's Department (EDCSO) were on scene at the co-op according to Tami Grimes, Information Officer with the FTB in Sacramento.
"The contents of the search warrant are sealed," said Grimes.
