Unemployment in Las Vegas rose for the fourth straight month. the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) reported this morning. The jobless rate jumped to 14.2 percent in August, up from 14 percent in the prior month.

Outdoor recreation activities in California’s national forests contributed $2 billion dollars to local economies and helped sustain an estimated 38,000 jobs in 2010.
The U.S. Forest Service’s National Visitor Use Monitoring report released Aug. 19 shows that national forests attracted 170.8 million recreational visitors nationwide and sustained approximately 223,000 jobs in rural communities across the country.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is hosting a Community Appreciation Day event on Thursday, September 29 from 4 - 7 pm to celebrate the Tahoe Basin community's commitment to protecting Lake Tahoe.

Nonprofit Groups Raise Funds With California Hunting Tags

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) invites nonprofit organizations to help wildlife by auctioning big game hunting license tags for the 2012-13 season. These tags will allow the highest bidder to hunt bighorn sheep, deer, elk and pronghorn antelope in California. There are only 13 of these special fund-raising tags reserved for 501(c)(3) nonprofit groups to sell and they’re sure to draw many participants to any fund-raising event.

It will be double-trouble for South Lake Tahoe motorists over the next few weeks, as roadwork is expected to cause delays on the city's two main thoroughfares.
On Sept. 14, Caltrans began working around-the-clock on its $40.6 million Highway 50 project within the city. Crews are grinding and paving the road between Fremont Avenue and Trout Creek. Lane closures are planned between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with traffic diverted to the eastbound lanes during paving of the westbound lanes, and vice versa. Motorists can expect up to 10-minute delays.
