It is a service organization that through its fundraising activities provides scholarships to women and young girls to enhance their ability to succeed academically. In addition, the organization funds and participates in many local school events that benefit the youth of our community.
One area of planned prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/06/2023 - 12:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) may continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Conditions and weather permitting, the Nevada Division of Forestry may burn hand piles near Incline Village beginning tomorrow, Feb. 7, 2023. Smoke will be present.
The one area scheduled for treatment is the Bon Pland Pile Burn area south of Incline Village on SR28. 20 acres of hand piles are slated to burn between February 7-10. Ignition is planned between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with smoke possibly present until 5 p.m.

She was born in Pasadena, Calif. to Michele Vayssie and Bruce Petke. Though she was adopted at birth by Clair and Frank Hall, she reunited with her birth parents in South Lake Tahoe when she was 25.
South Lake Tahoe to see sunshine this week, slight chance of snow to wrap up weekend
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/05/2023 - 6:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the latest in winter storms passes through, some sunshine and temperatures in the 40s are in the forecast. Expect some icy roads Monday morning.
Overall, the week ahead will be quiet on the weather front, other than one weak system brushing across areas near the Oregon border Tuesday-Wednesday. There is a 20 percent chance for a few very light showers near the border along with a slight uptick in breezes for areas near and north of I-80.

Traffic being held on I-80 and slow moving over US-50 at Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/05/2023 - 4:13pmCaltrans is holding traffic in both directions on Interstate 80 due to whiteout conditions and multiple spinouts over Donner Summit. At the same time, it has been slow going from South Lake Tahoe with chain controls in place on Highway 50.
Travelers on US-50 will find two sets of chain controls, one from Meyers to Twin Bridges and the other from Fresh Pond to Pollock Pines. There have been multiple traffic issues on the highway all day due to slick conditions.
Chains are also required on the Nevada side of US-50, from Stateline to Clear Creek.
SR-89 around Emerald Bay is closed.

The funds represent a company-wide effort through the Guild Giving Foundation that matches employee donations two to one in its more than 350 branches. The South Lake Tahoe Guild Mortgage has joined other offices that support food bank charities in the communities they work.

Birthing season for Lake Tahoe's black bears

While the mating season was last summer, the embryos do not start to develop until the mother bear enters the den, and they are normally born mid-January through February.

CDC warns of serious infections from use of certain artificial tear products

Between May 17, 2022 and January 19, 2023, CDC identified a cluster of 56 isolates from 50 case-patients in 11 states (CA, CO, CT, FL, NJ, NM, NY, NV, TX, UT, and WA) with serious infections. Thirty-eight cases are part of four clusters. The dates of specimen collection are from May to December 2022.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A weak system is expected to push through northeast California Thursday night into Friday. Southwest winds will begin to increase Thursday afternoon in the higher terrain, peaking early Friday morning. Ridgetop gusts of 70 to 100 mph could result in some aviation and mountain recreation disruptions. Winds will begin to diminish Friday afternoon.
Fundraiser to help with arrangements in bringing Kyle Smaine home to South Lake Tahoe

Kyle was a pro skier, talented cyclist, passionate adventurer, and an even more incredible human. The many communities he touched have shown an outpouring of love and respectful words for Kyle, and the family and friends are so grateful.

North Lake Tahoe putting community and stewardship into resort association rebranding
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/01/2023 - 8:57pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new Tourist Business Improvement District (TBID) covering the north shore of Lake Tahoe is already yielding results that benefit the community, the environment, and the visitor.
Launched in July 2022, an assessment fee was added to all business transactions for those who provide any type of visitor service including food and beverage, and retail. The fee can be paid for by the business, or added to the customer's bill, and is paid by all who use the business, visitor or not. Depending on the zone the business is located in, the fee is one or two percent.

Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe snowpacks still well above normal, some areas at record levels

There was a big boost from one of the wettest three-week periods on record this January, keeping the snowpack deep and full of water content. California has had eight or nine atmospheric rivers so far this winter. Last year there were two to three. A large number of atmospheric rivers has allowed the wide distribution of rain and snow.
Clean Up The Lake has ambitious dive schedule for Lake Tahoe and other areas of the Sierra in 2023

The non-profit organization is committed to fighting back against plastic and all forms of pollution both above and below the surface of its local waterways.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting and lunch will begin at 12 p.m. South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember Tamara Wallace will be the guest speaker. Councilmember Wallace will speak on the city’s goals and what is ahead for the city and its residents. Also speaking is the Nevada State Controller Andy Matthews.

Family's donation brings new K-9 officer Bubba to Douglas County

Thanks to that generous donation, K-9 officer, Bubba is now a member of the DCSO team. Bubba had a welcoming ceremony on Tuesday.
Caltrans safety and lighting project on US50 through South Lake Tahoe to address concerns

Nevada monthly gaming report: South Shore casinos drop, Nevada revenues increase
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/31/2023 - 10:06amNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,314,478,876 for the month of December 2022, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released today. This amounts to a 14.3 percent increase compared to December 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,149,986,166. For the fiscal year to date (July 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022), the gaming win has slightly increased, up by 2.87 percent.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Bobcat hanging out at Lake Tahoe Community College
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/30/2023 - 9:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Susan Baker and Sara Pierce were walking outside of Lake Tahoe Community College on Monday, January 30 when they came across the bobcat pictured above.
Sightings of the beautiful creatures have been occurring throughout the South Shore this winter. In one photo above, Don Flint saw one in a yard off of Pioneer Trail.
Bobcats used to rarely be seen around the Lake Tahoe Basin, or perhaps it was being more elusive and not allowing themselves to be seen, but they are making their presence known this winter.
They always elicit excitement when spotted.
Lake Tahoe Community College mourns the loss of beloved faculty member Dr. Clinton Culp
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/30/2023 - 8:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) faculty, staff, and students are mourning the passing of Wilderness Education and Outdoor Leadership director and faculty lead Dr. Clinton Culp.
He experienced a non-trauma medical emergency on Friday, January 27 while leading an avalanche instructor training class near Luther Pass. Despite the best life-saving efforts of the staff and students in the field, some of whom are medical professionals, and the emergency professionals who arrived at the scene to assist, Dr. Culp passed away. He was just 56 years old.

Tahoe Interagency Bear Team to teach people how to live responsibly with bears

This aims to help people live more responsibly with bears with guidance from several Lake Tahoe agencies.
This has long been the focus of wildlife advocates around the lake, and BearWise is meant to provide the same consistent messaging regarding bears and how to manage human-bear conflict across state lines and through all Tahoe agencies.

If you have never experienced snowshoeing, this is your chance. If you can walk, you can snowshoe - you don't have to race, just have FUN! “While going to the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings is always important for children, paying attention to things such as the drinks they consume can also make a huge difference for good oral health,” said Andrea Lindner Jones, health educator with the Oral Health Program.
Public invited to weigh in on UNR's 150th anniversary logo
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/30/2023 - 8:22amRENO, Nev. — The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking input in the selection of a logo to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Members of the community can select their favorite logo online starting today, Jan. 30, through Monday, Feb. 6.
On October 12, 1874, the University opened its doors to seven students in Elko, Nevada, marking the humble beginnings of Nevada’s original land grant university. The University will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Oct. 12, 2024.
A very cold start to the week at Lake Tahoe

Bitter cold temperatures are expected for Monday and Tuesday around Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada, with some locations expected to see their coldest low temperatures in the last five to ten years, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Local skier Kyle Smaine killed in avalanche in Japan

The 31-year-old had been skiing while on a marketing trip for Ikon Pass and Nagano Tourism when the avalanche occurred Sunday afternoon, Japan local time, the Mountain Gazette said.
