NV Energy remains on PSOM watch for South Carson, Genoa and Glenbrook

NV Energy remains on a public safety outage management watch for the South Carson, Genoa and Glenbrook areas, based on weather conditions. A proactive outage may affect approximately 1,650 NV Energy customers beginning at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, lasting until approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 26.

During a proactive outage – also known as a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) event – NV Energy will proactively de-energize power for customers in high-risk zones to help protect the community and environment from wildfires.

South Tahoe Middle School 7th grade girls basketball team ends season at 10-0

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) Girls’ 7th-grade basketball team, coached by Dave Finnegan and Tyler Pakes, went undefeated this season with a 10-0 record.

During the single elimination TAV-NEVA 7th grade Girl’s tournament, they also went undefeated with a 3-0 score competing against Whittell in the championship game.

LTUSD homeless and foster team holding drive for kids' winter supplies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Homeless and Foster team is holding an Advocacy Winter Drive for their clients.

Winter is fast approaching and they are seeking all items related to keeping local kids warm and able to play in the snow. They do not need jackets at this time since they are already graciously provided by the local Kiwanis club and are offered to all students.

Lake Tahoe Christmas tree permit sales begin November 6

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's that time of year again, the annual Christmas tree permit sale by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

This year, tree permits begin being sold on Monday, Nov. 6, 2023. Permits will be sold in person only at the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe at 35 College Drive. Permits cost $10 each (please bring cash only), with a limit of one permit per family or household.

85th annual Nevada Day Parade and celebration on Saturday

The Day of Days, the largest celebration of Nevada within the Silver State, returns for its 85th consecutive year on October 28, 2023, in Carson City.

This year, the theme is “Home Means Nevada,” courtesy of the beloved state song.

The fun begins at 8 a.m. on parade day with the ReMax Balloon Launch which will take place all the way from Fairview to downtown Carson Street.

All South Lake Tahoe 6th graders spend day with Wonders of Water and Environmental Education

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC) hosted its annual Wonders of Water and Environmental Education (WOWEE) Field Trip for all 240 South Lake Tahoe 6th graders at Echo Lakes Sno-Park on Monday, October 16.

STEEC is a collaborative network of over 25 local agencies and non-profits that work together with Alissa Zertuche of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Careers, Technology, and Education Department (CTE) to run place-based outdoor environmental programs for all students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

STHS Boys' Tennis Team heads to the NIAA State Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School (STHS) Boys’ Tennis Team is on its way to the state championships to represent Northern Nevada on two fronts. Led by head coach Will Davenport and assistant coach Glenn Berberet, the team overall swept their division, going undefeated all season, thus heading to Vegas as the #1 seed for Northern Nevada in the NIAA 3A division. Truckee achieved the second seed to compete at the State Tournament which begins Thursday at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas. South Tahoe plays Adelson, the #2 seed for Southern Nevada at 8 a.m.

California invests $3.7B to continue rebuilding transportation infrastructure for all travelers

SACRAMENTO — The California Transportation Commission (CTC) this week allocated more than $3.7 billion for projects to rebuild the state’s transportation infrastructure to enhance safety and create more convenient options for travelers.

Some of the projects are near Lake Tahoe, including Truckee and I80 in the Sierra.

El Dorado statehood initiative group to be in South Lake Tahoe

They will be handing out U. S. Constitutions and informing the public about their survey asking "YES" or "NO" to have the county leave the State of California and taking on the new name of The Republic of El Dorado State.

Former MLB pitcher and woman arrested as suspects in 2021 Homewood murder

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Arrests have been made in a two-year-old Lake Tahoe murder case. The murder of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of his wife, 68-year-old Wendy Wood shocked the small community of Homewood on the shores of Lake Tahoe on June 5, 2021.

AARP Tax-Aide Seeking New Volunteers

AARP Tax-Aide in South Lake Tahoe is recruiting new volunteers so we can expand our free tax preparation program next tax season. Two volunteer positions are available: client facilitators, who meet and interview taxpayers when they arrive at the Senior Center; and tax counselors, who complete tax returns after the interview, and submit the return to the IRS for the taxpayer.

Douglas County commissioners tackle VHR density levels with one asking for ban north of Cave Rock

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After the Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved the latest update to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance this past summer they asked for a look at density levels.

In July and August of 2023, the VHR Advisory Board conducted public hearings and discussed the issue of density. The VHR Advisory Board ultimately concluded that the 15 percent density limitations should not be changed at this time. They wanted the current rules to be in place for one year to then look at further changes if needed.

Douglas County Commissioners vote to show loss of $2.1M if ban on VHRs imposed

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - During their Thursday meeting, the Douglas County Commissioners heard the financial implications should a resident-initiated ban on vacation home rentals (VHRs) be approved by voters in 2024.

First phase of Heavenly Village parking garage improvements wrapping up

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe continues improvements to the Heavenly Village Parking Garage including a new circulation pattern, structural repairs, and accessibility improvements. Most of the work has been completed and the garage is now open to the public. Completion of phase 1 of the project is expected by Friday, October 27.

Memorial for Judith A. Cefalu to be held at Happy Homestead Tuesday

The memorial of Judith A. Cefalu, who passed away on November 20, 2020, is being held on Tuesday, October 24 at 11 a.m. at Happy Homestead Cemetery. The pandemic prevented the ability for a public memorial service of Judith from being conducted in a timely manner after her passing.

The internment of her ashes will take place on what would have been her birthday. The pastor of St. Theresa’s Church will join to provide a short tribute to Judith’s wonderful life.

South Tahoe High varsity soccer team hosts Incline Village for Senior Game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High Lady Vikings beat Truckee on Tuesday, 2-0. Truckee is on top of 3A Northern Nevada NAIA standings with an 11-1 record, South Tahoe is right behind at 10-1.

The Vikings play next in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday when they host Incline Village (3-7) at 12 p.m. for the annual Senior Game.

Tacos Por Favor will be on site, selling food as the girls play. The game is played on the football field at South Tahoe High School.

USFS accepting applications for permanent seasonal jobs

The USDA Forest Service is accepting applications for permanent seasonal jobs between October 19 and November 22. There are hundreds of entry-level permanent seasonal forestry technician and forestry aid positions available in exciting and rewarding locations across the nation, including 307 positions in California.

Douglas County Commisioners hold Tahoe meeting with VHRs on the agenda

Tahoe Women's Community Fund looks to add members and sponsors

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF), moving into its ninth year of giving, is looking for new and returning members to join their giving circle. For $125 or more, any community member can join the TWCF and help contribute to the multitude of nonprofits that serve the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

This giving circle is simple...through December 31, they collect memberships. Then, after that date, they total up membership donations, create a grant cycle for nonprofits to apply to, and then members democratically vote on the applications to support.

Expect helicopter tree removal this week as part of NV Energy Resilient Corridors project

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - This week, residents of Upper Kingsbury and Cave Rock can expect to see helicopter logging operations in their areas. Low-flying helicopters will be in the Upper Kingsbury area on Wednesday, October 18, and the Cave Rock area on Thursday, October 19, and Friday, October 20.

The tree removal is part of the NV Energy Resilient Corridor project. Approximately 5,300 acres are in the project area which consists of vegetation treatments in forest corridors adjacent to Nevada Energy transmission power lines.

South Tahoe High girls soccer teams host Truckee Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School Vikings girls soccer teams play three games this week, with the first being a Tuesday match-up with the Truckee Wolverines at home. The Junior Varsity team plays at 2 p.m., followed by Varsity at 4 p.m.

The 9-1 Vikings are second to Truckee who are currently on top of the 3A Northern-West Girls standings with their 11-0 record. The Varsity team is riding a six-win streak as the two teams face off on Tuesday, October 17 at South Tahoe High at 4 p.m.

Kudos: Heavenly hosts Monday Meal Dinner

With the coming of winter, the folks at Heavenly Mountain Resort are working hard to gear up for the upcoming ski season and hoping for lots of snow and great snow conditions on the mountain for this winter’s skiers and snowboarders. In the middle of all this planning and preparation, a crew from Heavenly Mountain Resort joined the Bread & Broth volunteers to provide a great meal for the diners at Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on October 9 at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall.

LTCC soccer teams head into last weeks of season atop the leader board

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) soccer teams are both undefeated in conference play this season and are sitting atop the Golden Valley Conference (GVC) standings.

The two teams have won a combined seven GVC titles since 2014. The men's and women's teams have never won a GVC title in the same season so they are trying to change that in 2023.

The women are 5-0 in conference and 7-6-1 overall. They host Redwoods at the LTCC field in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
