SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Governor Gavin Newsom appointed ten Superior Court judges on Friday, including one in El Dorado County; three in Los Angeles County; two in Orange County; one in San Bernardino County; one in San Diego County; one in Santa Cruz County; and one in Stanislaus County.

ECHO LAKE, Calif. - A new connector trail is being created at the Echo SNO-Park parking area will improve access to the Pacific Crest Trail/Tahoe Rim Trail, and there are upcoming volunteer days where the public can help.

Work days are planned for Aug. 22, 24 & 26.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Lake Tahoe has had its share of turning points. The mid-20th-century building boom was an infamous one. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors did not have to look far for their next general manager. At their meeting Thursday they appointed Paul Hughes, the District's chief financial officer.

With over 28 years in the public sector, Hughes brings a strong financial background to the position.

“The Board interviewed great candidates and unanimously selected Paul Hughes,” said STPUD Board President David Peterson. “He is an outstanding leader, outstanding fiscal manager, and outstanding problem solver.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -Help local veterans raise funds for a new roof at the Raise The Roof fundraiser at the American Legion Post 795 on Saturday, August 26 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The roof needs immediate attention and the price tag is high so proceeds will go towards fixing the roof along with other repairs and upgrades.

There will be food (served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.), music, and activities including horseshoes, corn hole, darts, billiards, kids' games, and more.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is hosting the much-anticipated grand opening of their new Thrift Store, Thrifty Tails Boutique, this Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. HSTT is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoption, community spay/neuter, and humane education programs in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - In addition to year-round restricted areas, enhanced fire restrictions are now in effect on National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin and will remain in effect through the end of December 2023, or until rescinded. Enhanced fire restrictions mean wood and charcoal fires are now prohibited in Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass, and Watson Lake campgrounds. Portable stoves are allowed with a valid permit.

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Amidst the growing concerns over the worldwide pilot shortage, opportunities are emerging for aspiring aviators to capitalize on the industry's demand. Western Nevada College (WNC) is stepping up to address this deficit by offering ground school courses that not only provide the foundation for a flying career but also allow students to earn college credit.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is still beach and hiking weather and the calendar says it is summer, but Vail Resorts is sharing its opening dates at Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort have announced their planned opening dates for the upcoming 2023-2024 ski and ride season. Heavenly and Northstar will target opening on Friday, November 17, and Kirkwood will target Friday, December 1.

NORDEN, Calif. - Sugar Bowl Resort announced Tuesday that Mike Jankowski has been named as its new Executive Director of Sport. Jankowski, an elite performance professional with 20 years of Olympic sport organization experience, has coached U.S. Olympic Ski and Snowboard teams since 2003. In his new role, he will lead Sugar Bowl’s ski and snowboard school, high-level sport education, Nordic, events, and summer experiences to deliver high-quality experiences and world-class events.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A retirement bin was placed at Grocery Outlet this week in South Lake Tahoe as a joint project between the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the American Legion Post 795.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There have been two major crashes at the intersection of US50 and SR28 on Spooner Summit in recent weeks, one of those crashes claiming the life of a 61-year-old man from Washington. Many are calling for a safer intersection in order to prevent more tragic crashes and further loss of life.

The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) is reporting a confirmed Hantavirus case in a Washoe County resident.

The person is a male in his 60s who has been hospitalized after being exposed to rodent droppings weeks prior. There is no update on the person’s condition and the investigation is ongoing.

This is the first Hantavirus case reported in Washoe County since November 2022. The last Hantavirus death was reported in December 2020.

SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. – A search is underway in Sequoia National Park for hiker Bill Roberts, 76, of Lake Tahoe, Calif.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and its contractors continue work on SR431 and SR28 at Incline Village. The NDOT and Q&D Construction's SR 431-28 Tahoe Project is a multi-year highway improvement project that will revitalize and enhance the existing roadways and utility/drainage systems helping preserve pavement and protect Lake Tahoe.

Drivers can expect reduced speeds through the work zone and up to 30-minute delays. Construction operations are weather-dependent and subject to change.

The following is the upcoming work schedule:

PLACER COUNTY – Caltrans is advising motorists of continued traffic-interfering work on State Highway 28 in North Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue to work on a gas line replacement project on Highway 28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

One-way traffic control is scheduled between Center Street and Ridgewood Road in Carnelian Bay from Sunday, August 13 at 7 p.m. until Friday, August 18 at 8 a.m. No work is scheduled on the weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For years, South Lake Tahoe residents have been expressing their desire to bring California television stations to Spectrum/Charter Communications, and other cable and satellite providers. There have been letters and telephone conversations with government officials, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and KCRA and other Sacramento television stations.

I am very pleased to learn that Caltrans decided to maintain the existing speed limit along U.S. 50 and SR 89 in the City of South Lake Tahoe for the next 14 years. I want to thank all of those who wrote letters and spoke out in opposition to raising the speed, the City Council for holding a public hearing on the matter and supporting us, and Caltrans for listening.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After heavy public input about the proposed speed limit change along US50 and SR89 in South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans has agreed to keep the existing speed limits. The public comments from the June 20 City Council meeting and input from the City have led to the speed limits remaining the same for at least the next 14 years.
