Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School team attends state conference

A team of educators from the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) recently attended the School Climate Conference 2023 in Temecula, Calif. The conference was focused on promoting positive relationships, school climate and culture, and safety for all students.
The LTESMS team was comprised of teachers from various grade levels, elementary site counselors, and the school's principal.
They used the unique opportunity at the conference to expand their knowledge and come back to share their insights with colleagues, students, and the community.

Not only is this a day to remember the victims of fentanyl poisoning, but it is also a day to educate the public about this deadly threat to communities, both small and large.
Prescribed fire operations resume around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Conditions and weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are scheduled to continue burning piles along the East Shore beginning today, May 9, 2023. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Valley Elementary School will once again be celebrating the talents of its students and raising funds for the Tahoe Valley Scholarship this Friday, May 12. The Tahoe Valley Talent Show will begin at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Valley School Theater and is free and open to the public. The Talent Show features the unique talents of 3rd-5th grade students, along with a staff act. This is the annual fundraiser for the Tahoe Valley Scholarship.
Besides the raffle there will be food available for purchase.

Many new mothers experience "baby blues:” feelings of sadness, impatience, or irritability after birth that last for a week or two. For some women, feelings of sadness are much more intense and elongated. These intense feelings are called postpartum depression, or PPD.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Public Utility District's (STPUD) General Manager John Thiel has submitted his resignation, effective June 2.
During the STPUD board meeting on April 20, Human Resources Director Liz Kauffman and President David Peterson provided details regarding the recruitment of the next general manager. An executive committee meeting was held last week to further discuss the next steps.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Heavenly Village is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a full lineup for its summer concert series which gets officially underway on Memorial Day weekend. So far, forty shows have been booked for the stage located between two of the village's restaurants, Fire and Ice and Gunbarrel Tavern.
The Heavenly Village Concert Series (HVSCS) runs through Labor Day. Show times are 5:45 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. and shows are free to the public.
Vikingsholm trail from SR89 to Emerald Bay temporarily closed due to hazardous conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California State Parks has announced that Vikingsholm at Emerald Bay is closed so crews can work on the weather-damaged trail. Not only is the trail to the castle closed, but also the historic grounds from the Boat-In Campground around the bay to Eagle Creek.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe’s first indoor mini golf course, Flatstick Pub, also known as Tipsy Putt, will be teaming up with the El Dorado County Search and Rescue Tahoe Team for the month of May. Each Sunday in May, Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased.
They've teamed up with Tahoe Search and Rescue (SAR) this month to donate Sunday FUNDday proceeds to their incredible cause. From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 8, 14, 21, and 28, join in the fun and support SAR.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An incoming low-pressure system brings with it a Lake Wind Advisory which is in effect on Monday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected. Waves 1 to 3 feet with the highest waves from mid-lake to north and east shores.
There are additional chances for showers and thunderstorms across northeast California and northwest Nevada Monday with chances spreading farther south on Tuesday before warmer and drier conditions settle in after midweek, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

12th annual Game Time Basketball Camp returns to South Lake Tahoe for ages 7-18

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After their biggest camp in 2022, the 12th annual Game Time Summer Basketball Camp returns to South Lake Tahoe July 17-20, 2023. Last year, over 60 boys and girls from ages 6-17 attended.
The camp is held at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Swim Complex, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.
This year's basketball camp is open to ages 7-18, both boys and girls from beginners to advanced.
Full Day: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m
Half Day: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., or 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Sidestreet Boutique will be on the STHS campus to take measurements on May 8, 9, 11, and 12 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., and May 10 from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Orders can be made at that time. Then, tuxedos and suits can be paid for and picked up on May 16 and 18 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and May 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This will be a free one-stop shopping event where students and businesses can connect on the spot.
The job fair is being held at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (1100 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a need for affordable housing in South Lake Tahoe, and during its meeting on Tuesday, City Council discussed possibilities to finance the construction of housing including an increase to the Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT) and a vacant building tax.
Many members of the public spoke on the subject, providing ideas and input on the current housing situation and solutions.
There was no vote on this item, just guidance from the Council to staff on how they'd like them to proceed on the next steps.

Conservancy announces opening date for Van Sickle Bi-State Park and Tahoe Pines

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Gates and facilities at Van Sickle Bi-State Park will open for the season on May 15, announced the California Tahoe Conservancy. The park’s roads, parking lots, restrooms, and drinking fountains will all become available for visitors, and trash collection will resume.
The Conservancy co-manages the 725-acre Van Sickle Bi-State Park with Nevada State Parks. The park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and the historic Van Sickle ranch barn and cabins.

TRPA awards $11.1 million to seven Lake Tahoe transportation projects

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has awarded $11.1 million to seven critical transportation projects across the Tahoe Region, the agency announced today. The projects listed below will improve safety and advance climate resilience at Lake Tahoe by reducing congestion, expanding regional trails, providing free transit, and supporting equitable recreation access.

Sure, he’s got love songs—his signature one is called “Sick of You”, and there’s another that’s probably not actually about bootleg liquor.
