Oak Fire at 18,824 acres and 36% contained

The Oak Fire has been burning east of the town of Midpines since Friday, July 22. To date, 18,824 acres have burned and firefighters have been able to put a containment line around 36 percent of the time. Most of this line is on the southwestern end of the fire where most of the populated areas are located.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care announces Wildlife Wednesday events in August

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care continues its Wildlife Wednesday series in August.

LTWC team members will host a 1-hour presentation and Q&A at Lake Tahoe Wildlife's Tahoe Fund Outdoor Learning Center on Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. This all-ages event is free, and donations are appreciated (suggested donation: $10 for an individual or $25 for a family).

18th annual Day in Paradise features duck races, live music, car show, food trucks

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is holding the 18th annual Day in Paradise on Saturday, August 6 from noon to 7 p.m. at Tahoe Paradise Park.

Admission is free and there will be free kids' games, a car show, food trucks, live music, a beer garden, a silent auction, and the famous Duck Races.

Purchase duck race tickets at the event - one for $5, or a "six quack" for $20. First place is $300, second $200, and third $100. Businesses can get a business duck for a $100 donation.

El Dorado National Forest interpretive hikes at Carson Pass

The El Dorado National Forest Interpretive Association is offering two upcoming hikes for the public to enjoy, both free of charge.

On July 29, there is an interpretive hike, “The Geology of Carson Pass,” starting at 10:30 a.m., and will start at the Carson Pass Information Station on California Hwy 88. Learn about the amazing geological formations around the area. These hikes are designed for people who can hike a couple of miles and appreciate the rocks as much as the flowers. University of California Cooperative Extension is holding online weekly workshops and in-person field trips to connect landowners affected by recent wildfires to post-fire management concepts, strategies, professionals, and programs.

On-line weekly Tuesdays, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. September 6 to October 4. 2022, and in-person field trips on October 12, October 13, and October 14 (participants attend one).

Cable Fire at 20 acres, 100% contained

UPDATE 7 p.m. 7/28; The Cable fire is 100 percent contained and remains at 20 acres in size. The fire will remain in patrol status for several more days to ensure no new smokes develop within the perimeter of the fire.

UPDATE 9 a.m. 7/28: Firefighters continue to gain ground on containment of the Cable fire which is now 90 percent contained. Crews are patrolling for hot spots and smoke within the fire perimeter and improving control lines. There are 28 people, and 2 engines assigned to the fire which is 20 acres in size.

The human-caused fire is under investigation.

The drive-through food distribution offers fresh, seasonal produce and non-perishable food for those needing help to get food on the table. Those walking in are welcome as well.

Recent power outages in South Lake Tahoe explained

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In recent weeks, four power outages in the South Lake Tahoe area have affected the same neighborhoods as shown in the photo above.

Underground electrical infrastructure issues caused all but one of these outages, according to Liberty Utilities. The other was a line going into fire mode. While these incidents were unrelated, they impacted the same circuit and therefore the same customers.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - SR28 is reopened after being closed Tuesday morning following a fatal collision in the westbound lane in Tahoe City.

Firefighters gain on Oak Fire - now 26% contained, 18,532 acres in size

UPDATE 9PM 7/26: The Oak Fire continues to be 26 percent contained and grew a bit today to 18,532 acres. Although good progress continues on the fire, there is much work to be done, according to CalFIRE. An infrared flight over the fire showed minimal heat in Lushmeadows and surrounding communities. Crews have been able to hold and improve the fire line in the Mariposa Pines area. More evacuation orders were reduced to fire advisement early this afternoon.

North Lake Tahoe Tourism Business Improvement District awards over $90,000 in grants

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - North Lake Tahoe’s new TBID Advisory and Zone 1 Committees, comprised of local business owners and representatives, have recommended the first three local projects to receive funding from the business community’s self-assessed Tourism Business Improvement District revenues. Mural and downtown lighting projects in Kings Beach and Tahoe City were recommended by the committees in support of the region’s stewardship education efforts and to support local businesses by adding to the evening ambiance and creating a welcoming sense of place in the downtown areas.

Local non-profit uses submersible ROV's to clean Lake Tahoe's lake bed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A full-time plastic clean-up crew is now operating in the depths of Lake Tahoe, pulling out batteries, trash, and microplastics with submersible Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).

After two years of refining the ROV and skills to remove the trash, the Restoring the Lake Depths Foundation team of Zephyr Cove started removing items full-time in May 2022 and continues to work Monday through Friday in Lake Tahoe. They use BlueRobits2 ROVs with grappling hooks, a claw, and magnets.

Pro-choice protest in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A pro-choice protest will be held at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 27 at 4 p.m.

This locally-planned event is the second one organizers have done since the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. This is also a fundraiser, with funds going to the Wild West Access Fund of Nevada. This fund was newly formed with the belief everyone should have the final say in their own reproductive decisions.

Over $1,300 was raised during the June protest between a GoFundMe campaign and cash donations taken in during the day.

Unhealthy air in South Lake Tahoe as Oak Fire grows to14,281 acres

The Oak Fire burning in Mariposa County has now consumed 14,281 acres in less than 48 hours.

The fire remained active through the night moving toward the communities of Jerseydale, Darrah, and Bootjack. Poor humidity recovery was observed overnight. On Sunday the weather is expected to remain hot with minimum humidity between 5 and 10 percent, which will hamper firefighting efforts. High tree mortality and dense fuels are throughout the fire area.

Fire evacuation and advisories remain in effect. Damage inspection teams are beginning their assessment of the areas affected by the fire.

Raging Oak Fire now 15,603 acres, 0% containment

UPDATE 7:00 PM: The Oak Fire is now 15,603 acres in size and remains 0 percent contained. During a packed community meeting tonight in Mariposa, fire officials said that, even though the containment line is at zero, they have been able to stop the spread of fire to the south. The active areas are to the north and the northeast, into the Sierra. There are a couple of fire scars in its current path that won't stop the fire but could slow it and let them get resources into the area.

Two men cited for camping, starting cooking fire in woods behind South Shore casinos

STATELINE, Nev. - Two deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the report of a wildland fire in the woods behind Bally's casino at Stateline on July 21 at approximately 8:25 a.m.

The deputies could see smoke coming from the woods just east of Lake Parkway. They walked in about 50 meters and saw signs of a transient camp with garbage, toilet paper, and debris scattered around the area. They found two men who were cooking breakfast over a fire pit dug into the dirt, and it was not a wildland fire.

Another fire near Yosemite: Oak Fire quickly spreading near town of Mariposa

7/23 UPDATE: The very active Oak Fire has now burned 6,555 acres. Fire activity is extreme with frequent runs, spot fires, and group torching. Emergency personnel are working to safely evacuate people and are actively engaged in protecting structures. Explosive fire behavior is challenging for firefighters.

MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. - At 2 p.m. on Friday, July 22, a fire was spotted near the town of Midpines, north of Mariposa on Hwy 140 and Carstens Rd. It quickly spread and was last measured at 1,600 acres on CalFIRE's website, though fire mapping is reported at 4,350 acres.

Green enters "no contest" plea to 2nd degree murder for 1985 stabbing of El Dorado Hills woman

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Michael Green appeared in Judge Suzanne Kingbury's South Lake Tahoe courtroom on Friday and entered a plea of "no contest" in the July 7, 1985 murder of Jane Hylton.

Michael Green, who is now 54, was 17 years old at the time of Hylton's murder.

The case attracted national attention after the original man convicted of the murder in 2005, Ricky Davis, had been found guilty and sent to prison. Long professing his innocence, DNA cleared him of the murder in 2020.

Free on-demand transportation service launches in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Link is a new micro-transit service that is officially launching in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, July 22. It will provide free on-demand transportation with a fleet of vans operating from Al Tahoe Blvd. through the Stateline corridor.

Lake Link will operate 365 days per year, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in summer and winter.

Power outage affecting over 4,500 South Lake Tahoe customers

10:10 p.m. UPDATE: Power has been restored to many of those affected by the earlier power outage in South Lake Tahoe. 719 customers remain without power at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting a power outage in South Lake Tahoe this evening, affecting 4,525 customers. The lines are currently de-engergized and the expected restoral time is 11:25 p.m.

The cause of the outage is unknown at this time.

Free all-comers track meets in South Lake Tahoe this summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two all-comers, all ages, track meets are coming to South Lake Tahoe, one on Thursday, July 28, and the other on Thursday, August 11. They will take place on the South Tahoe Middle School Track.

Registration on both dates begins at 4 p.m., with the meet starting promptly at 5 p.m. The lead official for the meets is Austin Angell. There is no fee to participate! Parking is available at the middle school.

Scheduled events include the 50m, 100m, 200m 400m, 800m, and 1600m as well as the long jump.

US Coast Guard: Wear your lifejacket - Man saved in Lake Tahoe due to his wearing one

LAKE TAHOE - The Coast Guard has sent out an update on the rescue of a 45-year-old man from Lake Tahoe on Wednesday. They were involved in the rescue after the man fell from a jet ski near Cave Rock in Lake Tahoe, Nev. on Wednesday.

First responders busy with two emergencies in Douglas County, one on lake, one on the road

7:40 p.m. UPDATE: The man missing on Lake Tahoe has been found and is being taken by boat to the Cave Rock boat ramp for evaluation. A family friend told South Tahoe Now they are checking for hypothermia but appears to be okay otherwise. He was wearing a life jacket.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - There was a two-vehicle collision on US50 near the entrance to Round Hill Pines Resort Wednesday evening, resulting in one person being ejected from their vehicle. They are being transported via Care Flight to Renown in Reno. A second person is on their way to Barton in an ambulance.

Two Gardnerville men arrested on drug and weapons charges

Minden, NV - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) conducted a search of a home in Gardnerville on July 19, finding inside suspected drugs, weapons and drug paraphernalia.

At approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday, DCSO deputies executed a search warrant at 1392 Highway 395. The warrant was the result of information learned the previous day when patrol deputies responded to the same home for a medical call. While there they observed drug paraphernalia along with obvious children’s toys throughout the house.

Reno man arrested after allegedly stealing vehicle and bringing to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Reno man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday after allegedly stealing a car in Reno and bringing it to the lake.

At noon on July 20, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received word that a 2012 Subaru had been stolen in Reno and was in the area of Takela Drive. The owner of the vehicle had it on a used car lot but was alerted the car was gone so utilized its GPS tracking system.
