STATELINE, Nev. - Most people know entrepreneurs Chip and Joanna Gaines from television and their popular show, Fixer Upper, and their Magnolia lifestyle brand and network.

Now they can add hockey team owners to their long list of achievements.

The Tahoe Knight Monsters and Zawyer Sports & Entertainment have announced that the Gaines have joined Tim and Demi Tebow and others as owners of the ECHL’s Tahoe Knight Monsters.

On Monday, December 2, a filling and ‘down home’ meal was served that eliminated any feelings of hunger that the dinner guests might have had when they arrived at St. Theresa Grace Hall that evening. As the 123 dinner guests moved down the serving line, they had a wide selection of toppings to finish off their fully loaded baked potatoes that were smothered in chili – sour cream, green onions, cheddar cheese, salsa, bacon, to name a few. The meal was finished with a green salad with almonds, mandarin oranges, rolls, and a wide selection of delicious desserts.

Tahoe Knight Monsters greeted by first hometown airport arrival

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area which includes South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Stateline, Markleeville, Glenbrook, and Incline Village.

The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 4 p.m. Thursday.

5.7 magnitude earthquake north of Yerington felt in South Lake Tahoe

Did you feel it? A 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the Western Nevada region at just after 3 p.m. Monday. The epicenter of the initial quake of 5.7M was 16 miles north, northeast of Yerington.

Since that time there have been over two dozen aftershocks up to 5.5M, with more possible.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has thousands of comments on its "Did You Feel It?" website. Those reporting are from the San Francisco area to Susanville, including Lake Tahoe.

Two legendary guests at Tahoe Valley Elementary's Santa Breakfast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Santa's Breakfast at Tahoe Valley Elementary School this past weekend was a great celebration of the holidays provided by the school's Parent Teacher Association.

About 400 people enjoyed pancakes, sausages, fruit, juice, hot chocolate, and coffee which was provided to students and their families free of charge. Each grade level also created themed baskets for a raffle, the only portion of the day that was a fundraiser.

On hand were two legends, Santa Claus and the Tahoe Knight Monster mascot - both a big hit with the kids!

Monthly gaming report: Lake Tahoe casinos "win" figure was $20.8M in October

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,286,209,664 for October 2024, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's latest monthly report. This amounts to a 2.19 percent decrease compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,314,955,517. For the fiscal year, the gaming win has decreased by 2.48 percent with $5,069,678,195 in "win".

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Chance of snow by weekend in South Lake Tahoe after a week that has highs in the 50s

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a cold front heading to the region, bringing some brisk winds and chilly weather Sunday night through Tuesday. It will be quick though as warmer temperatures are expected for the latter half of the week with highs in the 50s at Lake Tahoe.

There is finally a chance for an unsettled weather pattern on Thursday and into the weekend, with light showers possible along with gusty winds and mountain snow.

El Dorado County libraries are now fine-free

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County libraries, including the branch in South Lake Tahoe, are now fine-free! As of December 4th, 2024, they will no longer charge fees for overdue items or DVD rentals.

Fees for damaged or lost items will still apply, however there will no longer be a processing fee (some exceptions may apply). Charges still apply for printing, Interlibrary Loans, collections referral, and exam proctoring.

Items DO need to be returned within 21 days of the due date, or accounts, including access to the digital library, will be blocked.

Elves did it again at South Lake Tahoe Memorial Tree

The Elves did it again!! They visited the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial Tree in the park at Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Wildwood Avenue for the 14th straight year, leaving behind signs of Christmas with stockings and decorations.

There is a stocking at the tree for each of the over 260 children memorialized there.

Liberty crews working on several Lake Tahoe projects in week ahead

Living With Coyotes

Living in an urban/wildland interface, as we do here in the Lake Tahoe Basin, comes with a responsibility to do our best to coexist with native wildlife. Human/wildlife conflict issues can at times become flashpoints for local debate between community members, especially on social media. It's very important in these situations that the issue ultimately should be approached with common sense that will have an equitable outcome for both the human and the wildlife populations within our community.

GoFundMe started for funeral expenses for man who died in South Lake Tahoe jail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The family of the man who died while in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe has started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with funeral expenses.

Brandon Canfield, 50, of South Lake Tahoe, died on November 29. The cause of his death is under investigation.

Canfield's children have started the fundraiser in the hopes of raising $5,000.

Letter: Barton Hospital Relocation

This is my comment on Mr. Seth Dallop's Opinion piece about Barton Hospital's relocation plans.

The recent discussions surrounding the relocation of Barton Health to Stateline, Nevada, deserve closer scrutiny. While the intent to build a new hospital campus may initially seem beneficial, it is important to examine the broader implications for South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding communities.

This is in response to the opinion piece written by Seth Dallob on California shooting itself in the foot by passing earthquake regulations that he says have forced Barton Hospital to decide to move to the Nevada side. He detailed the potential for secondary economic effects that were dire, and possibly correct. There is only one problem with his article: the premise is incorrect, leading to his false conclusions.

South Tahoe High using new monitoring plan to reduce vandalism, vaping, and crowding in restrooms

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After months of trying solutions to end a growing problem in the South Tahoe High School (STHS) restrooms, the school's leadership is taking new steps.

Since last year, students have been increasingly hanging out in school restrooms, vaping, and causing damage, much of which is part of a TikTok challenge. The challenge has run rampant across the country, causing kids to rob, steal, and damage their school restrooms, and STHS Principal Justin Zunino says it's not going away like some challenges, causing some real health and safety concerns.

League to Save Lake Tahoe files lawsuit against Placer County over Village at Palisades project

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The League to Save Lake Tahoe has filed a lawsuit formally challenging Placer County’s approval of the Village at Palisades Tahoe Specific Plan. The County Supervisors approved the plan during a marathon meeting on November 19 that the League states will worsen traffic congestion, increase air pollution, erode roadways, and degrade water quality in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The League joins conservation group Sierra Watch in the lawsuit.

Lake Valley Fire's decorated engine starts nightly rounds December 11

The longstanding tradition of a decorated fire truck in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers continues again in 2024. Here is the Lake Valley Fire Protection District's holiday engine neighborhood schedule.

The truck runs December 11-23 and starts its nightly journey at dusk.

Knight Monsters sweep in Texas, head back to Tahoe after series in Utah

The Tahoe Knight Monsters defeated the Allen Americans 4-3 on the road in a jam-packed Wednesday night showdown. Adam Robbins scored twice, Sloan Stanick notched the game-winning goal on the power play, and Jesper Vikman won his second straight start with a 24-save effort.

This is Tahoe’s first-two game sweep of the season, and the two points vault them up to fourth in the mountain division.

Patagonia's latest film Papsura: Peak of Evil to premiere in Tahoe City

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - Patagonia is releasing a new film, Papsura: Peak of Evil, and its premiere screening will take place in Tahoe City on Tuesday, December 17. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with a show at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Inmate who died in jail cell identified as South Lake Tahoe man

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) has identified the deceased El Dorado County Jail inmate as Brandon Canfield, 50 years old, of South Lake Tahoe.

Canfield was found in his cell at the South Lake Tahoe jail on Friday, November 29 at 5:30 a.m.
