Douglas County Douglas County is hosting a Flood Outreach on August 6 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the CVIC Hall, Minden, NV. The event will give the public the opportunity to collect information, provide public input, and view flood damage maps.

“After our staff presentation on the flooding, we wanted to give citizens a place to gather and receive information from as many resources as possible.” said Douglas County Commission Chair, Doug Johnson.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

1:45 p.m. - Coroner's Investigation - Herbert Ave - A82-YEAR-OLD FEMALE WAS LOCATED DECEASED AT HER RESIDENCE. NO SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES WERE NOTED DURING THE INITIAL INVESTIGATION.

These recent fires in the forests near Lake Tahoe have had hundreds of fire fighters on the ground, digging fire lines, cutting down trees and putting out fires. It's not an easy job, the hours are sometimes endless or never enough. But those that do it, love it.

The U.S. Forest Service has been training the next front line of defense against forest fires.

The following is a recap of activity the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to from July 13 to July 19, 2015. They responded to 257 calls during the 7 day period.

Vandals were busy this week in Rabe Meadow on the South Shore, defacing the new bike trail railings and signage throughout the historic meadow.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) are working on the case, saying they see this type of tagging every summer. Surveillance cameras have lead to the arrest of perpetrators on several other cases and they hope that leads will come in on this case as well.

Road construction in South Lake Tahoe is synonymous with summer, and that continues to be evident on Highway 50.

Southwest Gas is conducting gas-line relocation work on the road from the "Y" to Al Tahoe Boulevard.

From July 26 to July 31, they will be working between Third Street and Truckee Drive during both the daytime and nighttime hours. The work starts at 8 p.m. on Sunday and will go until 8 a.m. on Friday.

Traffic control will be in place near the construction activity to shift traffic away from the work zone; however, access to residences and businesses will be maintained

During the past two weeks, several El Dorado County residents have been the target of scam artists attempting to obtain money from them. The scammers are not from the area and use internet based phones which allow them to select a local area code. They have been identifying themselves as local law enforcement and tell the call takers that they have missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The scammers tell the victims if they don’t pay, they will be arrested for the warrant. In most cases the caller has told the victim the amount of the warrant was $5,500.00.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District recently purchased new crew facility Station #22, which will act as quarters for the Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Crew. The public is invited to tour the new facility and celebrate the Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Crew on Tuesday, July 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tahoe Chamber will officiate a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Karla Huntsman will combine the art of storytelling with her talent as a musician, in a performance at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday August 26, at 6:30 pm. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Making meaning through story and theater activities has been Karla Huntsman’s life work. Huntsman believes in the power of storytelling to infuse life, joy, connection with self, and connection with others no matter the age of the listener. She sings, plays guitar, autoharp, washboard and djembe drum as part of her storytelling performances.

The human remains found in King Canyon near Spooner Summit in June of 2014 have been identified as Ryan Wallace Osburn.

At the time of his death, the 32-year-old Osburn was a Reno resident.

The remains had been subjected to heavy animal predation which required the identification of the remains by DNA analysis and comparison to family members.

Scientists have determined that Lake Tahoe’s iconic blueness is most strongly related to algae, not clarity. In a report released today from the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, researchers found the lower the algal concentration, the bluer the lake.

In the “Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2015” report, research shows clarity is controlled by sediment. Blueness is controlled by algal concentration, which in turn is driven by the level of nutrients available to the algae.

Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released the name of the 93-year-old man who died after a single car crash on SR207/Kingsbury Grade on July 20.

World War II veteran John Jacob Filas of Zephyr Cove was driving his Ford Ranger when it drifted off the road and crashed into a tree. NHP responded to the 2:44 p.m. accident. Filas was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center where he later died due to his injuries.

There is nothing quite like rich mahogany reflecting off the pure blue waters of Lake Tahoe, and there will be plenty of it to see as over 85 of the world's rarest wooden boats come to the Tahoe Keys Marina as part of the 8th Annual Wooden Boat Classic this weekend.

Each year, over 3,000 people walk through the boat slips, checking out the rare boats. There will be music, wine, food and vendors to enjoy as well. The Wooden Boat Classic brings together the fascinating and priceless history behind these elegant machines.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is encouraging motorists to slow down in order to save lives. Law enforcement from around the state, including the Nevada Highway Patrol, will be working around the clock to urge drivers and riders to slow their speed.

There has been a recent spike in statewide fatalities, and because of this, agencies aligned with Joining Forces will be focused on enforcing speed limit laws through August 10.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council narrowly approved a new temporary craft show ordinance and increased fee schedule during their meeting on Tuesday.

"Seems like overkill," said Councilwoman JoAnn Conner in her vote against the ordinance. "Its a tremendous amount of work for anyone who wants to come in and do an event and its a tremendous amount of work for staff."

Conner was speaking of the new ordinance which changes the rules for the eight temporary craft shows held annually in the city each year. She and Tom Davis were the two dissenting votes.

A 93-year-old Zephyr Cove man has died following Monday's single car accident on Kingsbury Grade.

The man, who's identity hasn't been officially released pending notification of next of kin, was traveling westbound on SR 207/Kingsbury Grade at when, for an unknown reason, the 2008 Ford Ranger pickup he was driving drifted off the right side of the road. The truck went through a dirt right-of-way and struck a tree.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to the 2:44 p.m. call near the road's intersection with Katherine Drive.

El Dorado County Senior Legal Services, a program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, is hosting a series of legal seminars in South Lake Tahoe for seniors during September and October, 2015. The seminar series, entitled "Planning for the Future," provides information about financial and health planning. Individuals may attend the series or just one class. Reservations are not required. The final celebrity jets were taking off from South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, just as the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) welcomed in a Bombardier CL415 firefighting aircraft.

Nicknamed "Super Scooper" because it can scoop up 1,600 gallons of water from a lake and drop it on the front lines of a fire.
