Chase International Foundation awards $12,500 to area non-profits

The bi-annual grant recipients include the Ian Casey Foundation, Reno Judo Club, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, For Kids Foundation, Rescued Hearts Ranch, Sierra Kids Foundation, Sierra Lutheran High School, and Supporting Our Survivors.

Tahoe Knight Monsters add veteran NHL talent with Center Luke Adam
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/18/2024 - 7:25pmSTATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters, proud ECHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights announced today that the team has agreed to terms with center Luke Adam for the 2024-25 season.
Adam, 34, comes to Tahoe after spending the last eight years abroad. He played seven seasons in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) from 2016-2023, and split time last year with HC Plzeň in Czechia and HC Banska Bystrica in Slovakia. In that 2023-24 season, he played 28 games and totaled 15 points (5g 10a).

They are just feet away from iconic Emerald Bay, beautiful beaches and tall trees, and underneath the turquoise blue water Lake Tahoe is known for.

Lake Tahoe Basin-wide evacuation plan completed, open for 60-day comment period
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/18/2024 - 8:20amLAKE TAHOE, Calif/Nev. - A new Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan has been developed through a collaboration between Lake Tahoe fire chiefs, law enforcement agencies, and emergency management personnel. The plan was created using a diverse team of experts from two states and five counties, using experiences gained during past major wildfires.
The 185-page document is a "living document" intended to provide the public with critical information related to evacuations and will be updated periodically.
South Lake Tahoe's Piper Arnold named to 2024-25 Stifel U.S. Freeski Team

The announcement was made in Park City, Utah on Friday, and South Lake Tahoe native Piper Arnold is on that list.
Piper, who turned 17 this summer, is on the halfpipe rookie women's team, joining pros Hanna Faulhaber, Svea Irving, Riley Jacobs, and the other rookie, Kate Gray, 18, of Crowley Lake who skis for Mammoth Mountain.
Suspect arrested, accused of starting the Crozier Fire that burned 1,960 acres in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/17/2024 - 11:34amEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has arrested a suspect for causing the Crozier Fire that ignited in El Dorado County on August 6, 2024.
On September 16, EDSO arrested Jason Robinette, 48, of Placerville, on a warrant issued by CAL FIRE Law Enforcement. The arrest was made following an investigation into the Crozier Fire.
Robinette was arrested in Placerville and booked into the El Dorado County Jail on charges of arson and starting the Crozier Fire, ultimately burning 1,960 acres in El Dorado County.
Bail has been set at $250,000.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigating apparent murder-suicide at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/17/2024 - 11:12amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to a report of two deceased persons in a vehicle in the Glenbrook area. Deputies arrived in the US50 and Kelly Circle area near the historical marker, and discovered a male and female, in the front seat of a GMC pickup truck.
DCSO Sheriff Dan Coverley said it appears the male shot the female and then shot himself.
TRPA and partners remove illegal moorings from Lake Tahoe

The Plan capped the number of piers and boat moorings, along with other shoreline activities such as commercial operations such as boat charters.

I oppose Measure N, believing it is poorly written and will do little but increase the inefficiency that haunts our local government. However, when it comes to Measure U, the school bond initiative for Lake Tahoe Unified School District, I find myself in an uncharacteristic position: advocating for its passage.

September 20, 2024 - 3:30pm Together with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District, the League invites volunteers of all ages to remove invasive terrestrial weeds from South Shore bike paths, so they don’t disrupt the native ecosystem.
The event will start at Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers and continue along the bike path. We encourage volunteers to bring their bikes to cover more ground.
After the event, volunteers can enjoy Music in the Park, a free summer concert series that will be the perfect way to unwind and celebrate our collective efforts.

One person dies after mid-air collision near Minden-Tahoe Airport

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - East Fork Fire Protection and Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded Monday morning to the area south of Johnson Lane near Heybourne Road for a report of an airplane crash.
DCSO is reporting that the two aircraft collided in the air around 9:47 a.m. on September 16. One of those aircraft were able to make a landing at the airport, while the other crashed into a field off Highway 395 near Johnson Lane.

I saw the local firefighters on the pier, flanking Ginger, and so I texted her back, "Wow, your timing is fortuitous," as I was just in Manhattan for one day, last Wednesday, September 11. I sat next to five firemen on the subway coming from the Memorial celebration at the Towers. Little did I know, this play "The Guys" is about that horrific day in our country's history.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/14/2024 - 7:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe area for Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. This includes the greater Lake Tahoe area including South Lake Tahoe, Markleeville, Truckee, Glenbrook, Stateline, Tahoe City, and Incline Village.
Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph and waves 1 to 3 feet.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing.

The hard work of firefighters has allowed the fire containment to increase over the last few days steadily, and it is now at 76 percent. With increased winds today, interior burning may occur in pockets of unburned fuel and the public could see isolated areas of smoke over the next few days.

Fundraiser started for Reno firefighter injured in Davis Fire
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/13/2024 - 4:33pmA Reno firefighter was injured during the Davis Fire this week and a GoFundMe account has been set up for him as he faces a possibly long journey. Alex Aldana is a 27-year veteran of the fire service and has served the citizens of Reno and Northern Nevada since 2005 with the Reno Fire Department.
As he was helping protect homes in the St. James Village area during the Davis Fire, Aldana suffered a potentially career/life-altering eye injury.
His crew was quick to render aid, and the medical support put in place through the Incident Management Team quickly got him to definitive care.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

The new season features an eclectic array of talented performers across various genres, offering something for everyone in the community.
Cascada de Flores will launch the season with traditional music from Mexico with in-school performances from September 23-27. The public performance will be on September 27th, 2024, at Lake Tahoe Community College Duke Theater at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the Tahoe Basin Caldor Hazard Tree Fuels Reduction Project is to reduce excess vegetation (fuels) associated with remaining hazard trees and to stabilize and revegetate priority areas disturbed by fire suppression and initial hazard tree removal activities.

The early meals were very simple and served around 25 dinner guests. Over the years, the Monday Meal menus have evolved and now the meals are restaurant quality, full-course, nutritious dinners serving up to 130 dinner guests.

Some residents allowed back into homes in Davis Fire area as crews continue to gain ground
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/12/2024 - 5:14pmWASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Crews have continued to make good headway on the Davis Fire on Thursday. All containment lines in place around the Davis Fire perimeter have been held, and hand crews will continue to shore up the lines (going back 20-100 feet into the fire area).
A couple of isolated unburned pocket areas - a total of 10-20 acres are producing the smoke seen in the area on Thursday. Firefighters want to burn them out and minimize future smoke on the fire. There was no change to the fire acreage during the day and remains at 5,824 acres.
Honoring Beverly “Bev” Etter at gathering at Sierra House Elementary

The community of South Lake Tahoe lost a wonderful teacher and friend in Beverly "Bev" Etter, who passed away on March 10, 2024. Bev was a longtime member of Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church.
Bev was a full-time teacher for 32 years, teaching in Weaverville, Corning, Chico, and South Lake Tahoe. Upon retirement, her passion for teaching brought her back and she substitute taught for an additional 22 years in South Lake Tahoe. In the total of 54 years, Bev taught, loved, and made a difference in the lives of over ten thousand children.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe's 31st Annual Golf Classic will take place on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Edgewood generously donates its course and facilities to the Club each year for one of its largest fundraisers.
LTUSD seeks people interested in the open Area 1 Trustee seat
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/12/2024 - 11:44amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With no candidates coming forward for the November election of a trustee for Area 1, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Education is seeking interested persons who would like to be appointed. Trustee Larry Reilly did not seek reelection to the Area 1 seat.
The position to be filled is a four-year term ending December 14, 2028.
Due to the vacancy on the Board of Education due to a "failure to elect," LTUSD Board of Education will appoint someone. Applications will be accepted until Friday, October 4 at 5 p.m.
