Tommy Moose, symbol of caring, donated to local police and fire departments
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/13/2015 - 11:52pmSouth Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments, and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office will be handing out stuffed moose to children they come across in their jobs who are facing times of stress, uncertainty and anxiety.
Members of Women of the Moose, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter 408 donated a box of Tommy Moose to the departments. Tommy Moose personifies one of the tenants of the Loyal Order of Moose: caring for children.
“The healing begins with helping kids at the scene of a serious event—starting right away makes good sense,” said Police Chief Brian Uhler.
South Tahoe's girls soccer team set to defend state title Saturday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/13/2015 - 11:20pmDespite injuries which sidelined several varsity players, the South Tahoe Vikings' girls soccer team beat Spring Valley Friday afternoon, earning them a spot in the state final for Division 1-A teams.
The final score was South Tahoe 3, Spring Valley 1.
Earlier in the day, Truckee lost to Faith Lutheran 2-1.
South Tahoe Vikings are looking to three-peat as the Nevada Division I-A State Champs, and a win on Saturday would give them four state titles in just five years.
Woman dies in Kingsbury Grade mobile home fire

Eric Guevon with the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District says the fire at the Ponderosa Mobile Home Park was reported about 12:30 a.m November 13, 2015.
A woman in her 60s was found dead; she died of fire-related causes, but a further cause of death has not been established. Her name has not been released.
The fire started with food left on a stove and is being considered unintentional, according to Guevon, who also says there is no evidence there was a smoke detector in the home.
Whittell High's football team continues to roll towards state title
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/13/2015 - 10:37pmThe undefeated Whittell Warriors football team won Friday's playoff game against Spring Mountain by a score of 48-26, earning them a spot in the Nevada State Championship game November 21. Whittell last won a state title in 1988.
Whittell took a commanding 34-18 into the locker room at half-time and never looked back.
They will meet Pahranagat Valley who beat Virginia City by a score of 76-32 Friday night. Both Whittell and Pahranagat Valley are 11-0 on the season. Pahranagat has won 92 games in a row so it should be a great game.
South Tahoe's Kaitlynn Watson signs letter of intent with Loyola

Watson takes with her a long list of accolades including All Team Academics, 1st Team All League and is currently ranked #2 in the state with digs at 360.
"The moment I stepped on the campus, I knew that is where I wanted to be," Kaitlynn said of Loyola. "They made me feel so at home, they're like a family and not a team." Watson will major in Biology with an emphasis in nutrition.

Prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe

DCSO looking for man who stole 50" television
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/12/2015 - 11:12pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in a theft at the Walmart on Topsy Lane.
On October 12, 2015 at approximately 3:25 a.m., the suspect entered Walmart and stole a 50” TV and exited through the emergency exit near the sporting goods section of the store.
Once outside, the suspect loaded the television in what appears to be a white or silver Chevy Lumina.
American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

El Dorado County man arrested after mother and brother found dead

Milo Lloyd Wallace, 49, was arrested at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, November 12 on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. His mother, 71-year-old Sandra Wallace, and brother Matthew Wallace, 38, were found dead with gunshot wounds Wednesday evening at the home his mother owned in the Oak Hill area southeast of Placerville.

The Lake Tahoe Humane Society's 29th annual Santa Paws will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tahoe Production House studios. Pets and family members get to pose with Santa Dog and have their photo taken by professional photographer Jen Schmidt. Bows and antlers for photos will be available.

South Lake Tahoe native Jerod Haase donates to UAB athletes

He donated $46,000 to pay the UAB basketball players' cost of attendance which covers college bills, travel and other expenses.
UAB men's basketball coach Jerod Haase has always looked at the bigger picture.
Whittell High's football team prepares for state semifinals
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/11/2015 - 8:39pmThe Whittell Warriors are continuing on their road to the Nevada state title after beating Carlin High last week, 36-20. Whittell hosts the semifinals on Friday, November 13 when they play the Spring Mountain Eagles in a 6 p.m. game.
The Las Vegas team beat Tonopah in the first round by a score of 72-14. They are the #2 seed from the south coming into the game.
The #1 seed from the north, Whittell, spent the holiday shoveling and snowblowing off the football field in preparation for the game.
Fourth graders get free park entry, free Christmas tree with new program

It is very easy to be part of the free program. First step is to log onto www.everykidinapark.gov and get a free pass.
President Barack Obama created Every Kid in a Park so fourth graders and their families could discover our wildlife, resources, and history for free!
All participants are also eligible to cut down a free Christmas Tree in Lake Tahoe.

Throughout the month of October, Backstage Pass members who earned 25 gaming points received one entry into the Jeepers Creepers drawing on October 31 for a chance to win a brand new Jeep Wrangler, courtesy of Carson Dodge Chrysler Jeep, or $20,000 in cash. Girls from South Tahoe High go for three-peat of Nevada state title
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/11/2015 - 3:01pmA little snow isn't going to get in the way of South Lake Tahoe's hosting of the 2015 NIAA Division 1-A High School Boys & Girls Soccer Championships November 13 and 14.
Since the new field at South Tahoe High is synthetic, snow can be plowed easily off the field, leaving it in good shape.
"Our maintenance department has done a great job of clearing the soccer field which is in excellent condition considering we recently had two snowstorms" said STHS Athletic Director Tony Sunzeri.

Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley to celebrate early openings
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 3:23pmAfter Monday's and Tuesday's snowstorm in Lake Tahoe, two more large ski resorts have announced their opening date, well ahead of planned.
Squaw Valley an Alpine Meadows have been making snow, and combined with what Mother Nature brought, they are able to open. Alpine Meadows is opening for the season on Thursday, November 12 at 9:00 a.m., a month ahead of the planned December 11 scheduled date. They plan on operating Kangaroo Chair as well as limited dining options.
Christmas tree permits for Lake Tahoe Basin go on sale Monday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 2:54pmThe popular Lake Tahoe basin Christmas tree permits from the U.S Forest Service go on sale Monday, November 16 on both the South Shore and November 18 on the North Shore.
Permits cost $10 each with a limit of two per family. They must be purchased in person, are not transferable and are sold on a first come, first serve basis. Even though USFS lists noon on December 24 as the last day for sales, they are normally sold out well before that date. In 2014, tree permits sold out on December 4. The last day to cut a tree down is Christmas Day, December 25, 2015.
Blue skies and warming trend for South Lake Tahoe; Chance for new storm Sunday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 9:58amA storm that didn't match predictions has moved east of Lake Tahoe, leaving behind fresh snow and clearing skies. Forecasts call for warming days and chilly nights around Lake Tahoe.
The storm hit the Reno and Carson City area the hardes, with lake-effect snow which dropped from 6 to about 18 inches. The deepest Reno-area snow fell in Stead, Panther Valley and Cold Springs. Over 36,000 Nevada Energy customers were without power overnight, causing some schools to close Tuesday.

Veterans of all wars and peace time are encouraged to join the students as they play patriotic music, including service songs, abd the National Anthem. There will be special recognition for WWII, Vietnam and Korean War vets.

Buckeye Creek project on Douglas County Planning Commission agenda Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/09/2015 - 2:24pmMuch like the lake side of El Dorado County and the west slope don’t always see eye to eye, the Douglas County portion at the lake, and the valley residents are in the same situation.
The topic currently at the forefront is Buckeye Creek Reservoir, located in the eastern portion of Douglas County. BLM has most of the land in this undeveloped area, and the Douglas County Sewer Improvement District (DCSID) owns 1,001 of those acres.
Heavenly and Northstar to open this weekend!
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/09/2015 - 2:00pmMother Nature has put in her best effort and the opening date at both Heavenly and Northstar have been moved up to November 14. The new snow totals overnight, combined with both the anticipated snowfall Monday night and snowmaking efforts, have helped the resorts open a week early.
Sierra-at-Tahoe hasn't given an opening date but Kirkwood has put November 21 on the calendar for their big day. Sierra's marketing team told South Tahoe Now that they are getting excited since snow is falling, and plan on opening as soon as possible.
Boreal and Mt. Rose resorts have already opened.
First wave of snow in Lake Tahoe passes, more due Monday

Just over an inch of fresh snow fell at lake level.
As of 8:30 a.m., chain controls were lifted over Echo Summit but remain on I-80, Hwy 88 at Ham's Station,
The National Weather Service forecast says to expect more snow showers Monday morning, mainly after 10 a.m. There is even a chance for some thunder.

City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates first 50 years

Those words, said by South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, were echoed throughout the evening as the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its first 50 years with a golden anniversary gala Saturday night.
Almost 300 people were at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to share memories of the past, review of the present, and a look towards the future of a city that was formed because many of the residents were tired of being represented by a government in Placerville.
Snow, wind and sunshine all in the forecast for South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/08/2015 - 11:06amThere is a lake wind advisory in South Lake Tahoe Sunday with waves two to four feet expected until 7 p.m., with the biggest wave action on the east and northeast shores. Winds will be from the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
The winds are in front of a fast moving low pressure system that will move across the Sierra and Western Nevada through Monday. It brings with it cold and snow showers starting on Sunday night.
Lake Tahoe road work schedule for November 8 - 14

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

KOLO reports it has spoken with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and they said the light in the sky was confirmed through the John Wayne Airport tower to be a Naval test fire off the coast. No further details.

South Tahoe High's Boys Cross Country team takes 3rd in State meet
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/07/2015 - 11:36pmSophomore Ally Sullivan of South Tahoe High wrapped up her second straight trip to the Nevada Division 1-A Cross Country State Championships with a fifth place finish. Sullivan hit the finish line in 21:05. Teammate Riley Rettig, a senior, finished 29th with a time of 20:14.
The south Tahoe boys cross country team took third place in the State meet, finishing just behind Elko and Spring Creek.
Six stolen cars found in Washoe County pond
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/07/2015 - 10:54pmAll six vehicles pulled out of Kiowa Ponds by volunteers from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office HASTY Team on Make A Difference Day, October 24 were reported as stolen according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
Five of the cars were reported stolen between 1996 and 1998, the sixth in 2007. Three of the vehicles were reported stolen in Reno, two from Sparks and one from Sacramento, CA. All agencies involved have been notified of the recovery.
Whittell's football team 10-0 on year, beats Carlin to move to next round
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 11:32pmThe Whittell Warriors are entering next week's Nevada State Championship semi-finals as the number one seed after their 20-14 win Friday night over Virginia City.
This was the Warrior's first post-season home game since 1991. They get to do it again on Friday, November 13 when they host Spring Mountain, the number 2 seed from the South. Game time is 5 p.m.
Virginia City will play Pahranagat Valley on Friday as well. Their 7 p.m. game will be played at Alamo, Southern Nevada.
Barton Foundation hands out $35,500, still has $14,500 left to give

For the seventh year, the Barton Foundation gave away money raised through their annual fundraising efforts which include the annual Festival of Lights.

South Tahoe Girls Soccer Team moves onto State Tournament

Championship next weekend.
Number 1 seed Truckee will meet with the number 2 seed Vikings on Saturday morning to determine the final bracket for State.
South Tahoe had a first round bye yesterday, then met Spring Creek for Friday's game. The Vikings won the game, 5-2.
The State Tournament will be held in South Lake Tahoe November 13-14 at South Tahoe High.
Road to State ends for South Tahoe Boys Soccer Team
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 8:24pmIt took double-overtime Friday afternoon for the Sparks Railroaders to beat the South Tahoe Vikings in the second round of the 2015 NIAA Division I-A Northern Region Boys Soccer Championship.
The Vikings won their first round game in Elko on Thursday, beating Lowry 6-2.
Whittell girls go for repeat of NIAA Division III Nevada State High School Championship

The girls beat Incline, the host of the tournament, by a score of 3-2.
North Tahoe beat their first round opponent, White Pine, 3-0, setting up the state tournament game between the Tahoe Basin's North and South. The game will be played Saturday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at Incline High School.
Second suspected DUI lands El Dorado County schools chief in jail
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 7:21pmEl Dorado County schools chief Jeremy Meyers was arrested Thursday for the second time in five months for allegedly driving under the influence, this time after he crashed his truck into a utility box at 2 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Meyers, 45, allegedly had a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent or more, a threshold approaching twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to the CHP. Authorities did not provide his exact blood alcohol level.
