South Lake Tahoe man awarded Moose International’s highest degree

He was recognized at a ceremony held on June 3 at Moose International Headquarters, located just west of Chicago in Mooseheart, Illinois. There were also 117 additional Moose members from the United States, Canada, and England who received the Pilgrim Degree. Moose Pilgrims from all three nations gathered at Mooseheart to attend the celebration.

City expands days of operation for El Dorado Beach boat ramp
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/15/2023 - 7:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Low water levels at Lake Tahoe the last two years caused the closure of the boat ramp at El Dorado Beach by this time of year, but the City of South Lake Tahoe announced they will expand its hours starting Friday, June 16.
The ramp will be open Fridays through Mondays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and it will be closed on July 4.
Fees for the boat ramp are collected on-site and can be paid via debit or credit card. The 2023 summer boat ramp fees are as follows:

El Dorado County Supervisors unanimously approves a $1 billion spending plan

The total recommended budget for all governmental funds for Fiscal Year 2023-24 is $1.01 billion, which is $25.7 million (three percent) more than last year’s budget of $986.8 million. These totals reflect all governmental funds, including special revenue funds. They exclude special districts and proprietary funds.
Douglas County officially appoints Emergency Management Director Kara Easton

Although Easton started her employment with Douglas County on May 8, the County was still under contract for Emergency Management services with East Fork Fire District through June 30, 2023. She assumes her official position on July 1, 2023.

There will be a public meeting to unveil the project on June 28, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. held in the City of South Lake Tahoe Council Chamber.

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band is a renowned musical group led by the legendary drummer Ringo Starr. Formed in 1989, the band features a rotating lineup of accomplished musicians from various backgrounds, each bringing their unique talent to the stage. On Aug. 3, 1992, Ringo and his All Starr Band played at the Harveys Outdoor Amphitheater, the venue's name at the time.

Requests are now being taken through an online portal that can be accessed on both the SLTFR and LVFPD websites at South Lake Tahoe or Lake Valley. Links can also be found on both of the agencies' Facebook pages.
High altitude gardening: Is the Shasta daisy the poster child of Lake Tahoe?

It originated as a hybrid produced in 1890 by the American horticulturist Luther Burbank from a number of daisies. While the intergenetic crosses and multiple hybrids used to create the Shasta Daisy can be interesting to some, its hearty white flowers and relatively low maintenance may be more important to the Tahoe gardener.
If you thought a Shasta daisy was all you had to ask for at the nursery, you are wrong. There are so many varieties (or cultivars).

Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics comes through South Lake Tahoe .

Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members from the Sacramento region, along with inspiring Special Olympics athletes, carried the "Flame of Hope" through the City of Sacramento, culminating at the State Capitol's west steps.
Law enforcement and athletes carried the torch starting Tuesday through 30 counties and over 180 cities.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Rick moved to Lake Tahoe in the late 80s after graduating high school in Prior Lake, Minn., and attending the Art Academy in St. Paul, Minn.
Landing at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Rick spent 38 years working mostly in the table games department where he was a much-loved coworker and friend to so many.

New parking lot, trails planned for old Elk's Club Lodge area near South Lake Tahoe

On Thursday, June 15, the Board will consider spending up to $1,200,000 on water quality improvements and creating better access to trails and the Upper Truckee River by reconstructing the parking lot and trail connections.

Former snowboard and soccer coach pleads guilty to distribution of child pornography
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/12/2023 - 2:12pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Timothy Mackey, 42, of South Lake Tahoe, pleaded guilty today to distribution of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
According to court documents, Mackey was a member of chat groups that shared child pornography on the social media platform LiveMe, including a group named “No Limit!!!” On Feb. 6, 2020, and Feb. 25, 2020, Mackey, using the username “bag of rock,” posted multiple images of child pornography in the “No Limit!!!” group.

Expect delays as Caltrans starts pavement repair on a stretch of US50
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/11/2023 - 10:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Repair work on a 2.5-mile stretch of US50 between Pioneer Trail and Jewell Road gets started on Tuesday, June 13. Caltrans is alerting motorists that the work will be traffic-interfering as Granite Construction will be grinding down and repaving rough sections of pavement on US 50 in both directions.
This work is part of the $17.1 million Caldor Fire Restoration Project.

For a tax-deductible donation of $350, AAD sponsors host a designated Monday Meal. The donated funds are used to help feed up to 100 people with a hot, nutritious, well-balanced meal prepared and cooked by B&B’s talented and creative cooking teams.

It was a chaotic scene on several weekends and holidays with cars stuck on the roads surrounding the resort, vehicles sliding and colliding on most streets, and residents in the area unable to get in and out of their driveways.

Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity that is dedicated to supporting the Tahoe region, and its Tahoe Fire Safe Initiative was created to fund fire prevention strategies in the Tahoe Basin, focusing on people and property.

Diamond Valley takes flight
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/10/2023 - 6:10pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Inspired by the Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival, Diamond Valley Elementary School’s 5th and 6th-grade students sought to learn just how balloons fly. Investigation of convection currents proved to be an interesting diversion that led to a challenge to create their own hot air balloons out of tissue paper.
Students spent a few weeks researching and crafting their balloons and then invited their friends and families to the launch day, where balloons and motivation for learning were both lifted high.

59th annual Lake Tahoe Relay on Saturday starts and ends in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/09/2023 - 7:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be runners racing around Lake Tahoe on Saturday, all of who are taking part in the 59th Lake Tahoe Relay, the longest-running relay in the country. It starts at 5 a.m. at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe. This serves as the finish line as well.
The Lake Tahoe Relay teams consist of seven people, each running approximately 8 to 12 miles. All runners will have the same team number pinned on the front of their shirts.
There is also a two-person relay team with two members, each running 36 miles on alternating legs.

Join them for an interactive day of exploration, fun crafts and interesting activities provided by local businesses and organizations in their Victorian-era school house museum on the Saturday of Fathers’ Day weekend.
Activities include printmaking, calligraphy, printmaking, gold panning, videography, Scottish Highland Dance, robotics, and more.

Ebbetts, Sonora, and Monitor passes in the Sierra all now reopened

Crews typically begin removing snow from the roadway on the first Monday of April each year and work seven days per week until each pass is free of snow and all roadway hazards before declaring them officially open for the spring and summer months.
More thunderstorms and rain in South Lake Tahoe's weekend forecast
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/09/2023 - 1:17pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The pattern of thunderstorms and the chance of rain and hail continue throughout the region this weekend. Even though Friday only has a 15 percent chance of rain, there is a daily risk of thunderstorms, including hail up to nickel size, gusty winds up to 50 mph, and lightning. There is an increased risk of locally heavy rains and flash flooding, especially from Saturday through Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
If you plan to be outside, pay close attention to the conditions and have a way to receive alerts and weather info.
