City of South Lake Tahoe seeks entries for 4th of July Parade
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/24/2023 - 3:39pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe is bringing back its annual 4th of July Parade and registrations are now open. They expect spaces to fill up quickly as the community celebrates the summer after such a difficult winter.
This year’s parade theme is, “Celebrating the Red, White, & Big Blue!” Individuals, businesses, sports groups, philanthropy groups, schools, etc. are invited to participate and float entries are highly encouraged.
Back for the second year, the Best of the Parade Awards will be awarded to the following categories:

Man wanted in connection with a Bay Area homicide arrested at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/24/2023 - 2:44pmA man wanted for questioning for his possible involvement in a homicide in Pleasant Hill, California was arrested at Stateline Sunday night.
On Sunday, April 23 at approximately 9:22 p.m., a license plate detector near Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, Nevada alerted law enforcement of a vehicle whose driver had a felony warrant out for his arrest as a person of interest in connection with a Bay Area homicide. The warrant had been issued by the Pleasant Hill Police Department.
Prescribed fire operations continue this week around Lake Tahoe

Conditions and weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are scheduled to burn piles along the East Shore beginning today, April 24, 2023. Ignitions typically begin around 10 a.m. and smoke will be present.

Lake Tahoe Basin will see lots of sunshine and rising temperatures this week
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/23/2023 - 4:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most residents of the Lake Tahoe Basin can't wait to start their spring chores around the yard, and the forecast shows they can soon get started (who knew bagging pine needles could be exciting?). The snow will melt quickly this week as a robust ridge of high pressure builds over the west. This pushes high temperatures into the 80s for lower valleys and mid-60s to around 70 for mountain valleys from Thursday through the end of April, if not the first day or two of May.
This will be a significant test of the snowpack and associated snowmelt.

Girls will learn more about STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) from women with careers in STEM. Dr. Jamie Orr, cofounder of Cowork Tahoe, Physics Professor Cathy Cox from Lake Tahoe Community College, Victoria Ortiz from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and pediatrician Dr. Rita Wang will present and do activities with the girls.
This event is part of Erin Yamaoka's senior project.
Sacramento Kings' mascot Slamson hits the slopes at Sugar Bowl
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/22/2023 - 5:11pmWith a break in the action on the courts, the Sacramento Kings' mascot "Slamson" hit the slopes at Sugar Bowl Resort on Saturday. He got in some spring skiing as the resort hosted its annual season-ending party.
There was the Sugar Bowl Tiki Pond Skim which included costumed skiers and riders attempting to cross the pond between the Disney and Nob Hill chairlifts near the Village Lodge base area, with live music, a pop-up tiki bar, and a snow beach viewing area to watch the action.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fundraiser for Living Beyond Breast Cancer, "Pinkleball in Paradise" will be held at Tahoe Paradise Park July 1, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The national nonprofit connects all those affected by breast cancer with trusted information and a community of support.
Everyone is invited to play or come by and watch too. There is a raffle and a food truck, and a portion of the food truck sales will also go to the fundraiser.

During their joint board meetings this past week, the trustees heard from leadership the changes they have been implementing to meet their goal of having all local students graduate high school with college credits, and creating a college-going community.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's the day that many locals wait for - $5 Dump Day on June 10! An annual tradition in South Lake Tahoe, Community Cleanup Day allows residents to get rid of unwanted items for just $5 a carload, along with free dumping of mattresses, refrigerators, computers, and televisions. The cost is $10 for a truckload or for Nevada residents. No construction materials are allowed.
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., vehicles can go through the line at South Tahoe Refuse, located at 2140 Ruth Avenue, South Lake Tahoe (yes, you could go through more than once).
Mural wall comes down as Tahoe Wellness Center expands into new space

People loved the art, disliked it, or ignored it, but it is now gone as TWC owner Cody Bass prepares to unveil the business expansion.
While the mural on the outside is gone, the same artist, MEAR ONE, is painting another on one full wall inside the cannabis dispensary.
Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks local food donors

Currently, Bread & Broth serves a hot and nutritious, full-course Monday Meal at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall and provides seconds and food “giveaway” bags containing groceries for the week. In addition, Bread & Broth provides a soup and simple entree through the Second Serving program at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church each Friday.

Two-thirds (66 percent) of teens who report abuse of prescription pain relievers are getting them from friends, family members, and acquaintances. While some teens abuse medicine to party and get high, many are using medicine to manage stress or regulate their lives.

Coco Maliya ~ 1967 - 2023

Coco moved to South Lake Tahoe shortly after birth. She also lived in Georgetown, Calif. where she graduated high school. She lived in Hawaii for a short time and she always dreamed of going back as she felt like it was also her home though she always seemed to come back to her home at Lake Tahoe.
She started her massage therapy career over 25 years ago. She worked at Biospirit for years, she loved her co-workers and clients like family. She truly had the talent to heal people.

Residents chime in on El Dorado County VHR ordinance
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/20/2023 - 5:31pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Supervisor Brooke Laine held a Vacation Home Rental (VHR) update meeting with El Dorado County staff Wednesday night in Meyers. On the agenda was a presentation from the county's VHR Program Manager, Brendan Ferry.
Laine said the meeting was to "start the conversation" as the county reviews the current ordinance and looks for possible updates.
Originally scheduled for a March Board of Supervisors' meeting but postponed due to heavy snow, Ferry gave attendees the same presentation he'll give to the board on May 2.

Forest officials stress that it is extremely important for firewood cutters to pay special attention to the terms and conditions of their permits.
Firewood permits cost $10 per cord with a two-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum for the year. A cord is the amount of wood in a stack four feet wide by four feet high by eight feet in length. Permits are valid through Dec. 31, 2023.
South Tahoe High students compete in statewide National History Day

Under the direction of history teacher Daniel Tirre, the students prepared for the National History Day competition held at Sacramento State University last weekend.
"These projects were very high quality and gave our students a chance to show off their academic abilities," said Tirre.

The Board of Directors and staff were unanimous in their support for these outstanding new staff at the Tahoe Prosperity Center.
“There is so much important work to do in our region to improve our community by providing more local housing options for workers, accelerating high-speed broadband, and promoting economic diversification. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Yosemite Climbing Association, whose mission is to preserve the history of climbing and the lands we all love to recreate in, is holding a fundraiser on the South Shore on June 4.
Yosemite Climbing Association (YCA), a 501-c(3) nonprofit, creates community stewardship events through their nationwide "Facelift: Act Local" campaigns where they clean up trash and contribute to trails and climbing crags.
Roof collapse not enough to sideline Sidestreet Boutique for long

"The chandelier was swaying and there were cracking noises coming from the roof," said Barbara, the owner of South Lake Tahoe's Sidestreet Boutique. She knew it was more than nearby avalanche control cannons but was not exactly sure what was happening. She got the customers out and closed up.
At 10:58 p.m. that evening, the cameras showed her what was happening - the roof above Sidestreet Boutique collapsed and the sprinkler system cracked, sending massive amounts of water into the store.

City of South Lake Tahoe opens cannabis revenue grant application period

Snow could delay opening of grading season at Lake Tahoe for some projects
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/17/2023 - 3:54pmThe Lake Tahoe Basin grading and digging season for permitted projects normally runs from May 1 to October 15, but with the record snowpack this year at the lake, some projects and sites may be delayed this year due to unseasonal amounts of snow and wet conditions.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) said property owners and project managers should plan ahead for delays to the start of grading activity and pre-grade inspections.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Celebrate Earth Day with a good, old-fashioned community cleanup on Friday, April 21 from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. The League to Save Lake Tahoe will host the 9th annual Earth Day Cleanup at Heavenly Village.
Warming spring weather can expose trash left behind as winter snow starts to melt, leaving South Lake Tahoe scattered with litter. This debris is an eyesore and can harm not only wildlife but also Lake Tahoe’s clarity.

Sorensen’s Resort Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra history series on Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m. This new program includes a slide show, The Big Bang.
The incredible, true, and bizarre story of a calculating and disgruntled gambler, and his attempt to extort three million dollars from the historic Harvey’s Casino Lake Tahoe casino in August of 1980.
The 55-minute program is free and open to the public and will be inside the café at the Resort on CA Hwy 88.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Learning Haven (TLH) is hosting a Student Summer Job Fair on Wednesday, May 10 from 6:45 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (1100 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe). This will be a free one-stop shopping event where students can leave with a summer job!
There will be over 25 local businesses there, all looking for summer employees. TLH will help teens create a simple resume, complete applications, interview, and complete their work permits.
In just 2.5 hours, students can leave with their perfect summer job.
