After two months of sweat, scrapes, carving and lots of attention paid to detail, a new sign went up Tuesday at Lake Tahoe Golf Course, marking a generation of landmarks that bring in an all-encompassing natural environment perspective.
With the design furnished by Lake Tahoe Golf Course, Jeanette Minier developed, constructed and hand-carved the sign which is now perched at the entrance of the golf course at 2500 Emerald Bay Road. Final touches with masonry continues.
Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe to Give $28,000 to Local Nonprofits
Rather than funding many smaller projects as in the past, this year Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation, Inc. (SISLT) will distribute $28,000 to a maximum of five local nonprofit organizations. The goal of this new approach is to encourage applicants to think big and create increasingly impactful programs for the community.
Rumors persist a week after deadly IHOP shooting
A week after the IHOP shooting, investigators continue to piece together the last 72 hours of Eduardo Sencion’s life in an effort to figure out what precipitated the man’s deadly rampage that ended in five deaths including Florence Donovan-Gunderson of South Lake Tahoe, Major Heath Kelly, of Reno; Sgt. 1st Class Christian Riege of Carson City and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney of Reno. Flash flood watch continues through 11 p.m.
Update 6:05 p.m.: Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in isolated areas around South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, along with several lightning strikes. Lightning likely caused one spot fire high in the trees south of the intersection of Highway 50 and 89 in Meyers. It appeared, however, that heavy rain doused the flames.
Meanwhile, a flash flood watch remains in effect until 11 tonight for portions of California and Western Nevada including the greater Lake Tahoe area, Carson City and Reno.
Power restored to about 3,500 Liberty Energy customers
Liberty Energy reports that power has been restored after a brief outage in South Lake Tahoe this afternoon that affected about 3,500 customers.
Power went out at about 2:30 this afternoon and was fully restored by 3:15 p.m., said Randy Kelly, manager for Liberty Energy. The outage stretched along Pioneer Trail, to Black Bart and included Lake Tahoe Community College and the South Tahoe Public Utility District sewer plant, Kelly said.
Douglas County man dies in motorcycle crash on Spooner
A 25-year-old Minden man died Saturday in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 50 east of the Douglas County line on Spooner, seven miles west of Highway 395 in Carson City, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
According to NHP Trooper Chuck Allen, Edwin Bruno-Mazariego was riding his green 2008 Kawasaki ZX600P motorcycle east bound on the four-lane highway. For reasons still unknown, he failed to negotiate a left hand curve and departed the travel lane striking the adjacent section of guardrail.
Taco eating contest at MontBleu nets Kings Beach man $1,000 (PHOTO GALLERY)
The first of its kind Lake Tahoe Taco Eat-Off Challenge at MontBleu Resort, Casino and Spa was won Saturday by Erik Irwin from Kings Beach. He ate 14 tacos in 10 minutes to take home $1,000 in cash. More city services on the chopping block; budget meeting Thursday

A special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council to discuss the 2011-12 budget will be held this Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7pm. Not only is this the first look the public will have at the proposed budget, but this may be the only opportunity for public input before layoffs in crucial departments like streets and recreation. The regular council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Improv host reflects on 9/11 2001 show
Comedians get paid to make people laugh. But what do you do on a day when it seemed the whole nation was crying? On the night of September 11, 2001, 200 people had tickets to see three comedians at the Improv comedy club at South Tahoe. Stateline casinos see 25 percent revenue increase in July
Good news for South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos to report this morning. Stateline gaming establishments saw a 25.42 percent increase in revenue over July 2010 figures, according to figures released today from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
Statewide casinos had an overall 3.66 percent increase in “gaming win” for the month.
