Lake Wind Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe starting Friday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the greater Lake Tahoe area from 7:00 a.m. Friday to 4:00 a.m. Saturday.

Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2 to 4 feet.

Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

The winds caused by the system moving through the Great Basin Friday will be gusty with impacts possible to aviation and ski operations, as well as a slight cooldown for the region through Saturday.

Wind gusts are still on track to be around 80-100 mph along the Sierra crest, according to NWS Reno. This is a setup that favors stronger winds for the western slopes of the Sierra into the Sacramento Valley, and not so much for the eastern side of the Sierra.

Meaningful precipitation is unlikely through the end of January.
