LTUSD pushes start of cohort K-8 to Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Originally planned for Monday, the move to Phase 2 hybrid structure of learning at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) for grades TK through 8 will start Thursday, February 4. Monday and Tuesday will be synchronous virtual learning days which allows for teachers to prepare for not only the next storm this week, but also a return to hybrid instruction for Cohort B. Cohort A will start Monday, February 8.

The announcement was made on January 22 that Phase 2 would start February 1. LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler said they have been monitoring local COVID-19 data and case numbers in South Lake Tahoe have been stable or trending down. Cases cases among LTUSD staff have also been decreasing and teachers have started the vaccine process.

During the January 26 School Board meeting, teacher union representatives Jodi Dayberry (local) and Mike Patterson (state level) said LTUSD was in violation of their operating agreement, and teachers needed a two week notice to get back into the classroom for in-person learning. Dayberry, president of the South Tahoe Educators Association, said they'd be filing unfair practice grievances if LTUSD stayed with the February 1 Phase 2 date. The new date is a 14-day notice.

All in-person programs for students receiving special services, infant and preschool programs, and child enrichment will resume on Wednesday, February 3. The high school will not open until El Dorado County has been in the "red tier" for two weeks. The county is currently in the "purple tier."
