The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been able to open several mountain highways that had still been closed due to heavy snow received this winter at upper elevations.
Crews typically begin removing snow from the roadway on the first Monday of April each year and work seven days per week until each pass is free of snow and all roadway hazards before declaring them officially open for the spring and summer months.
Ebbetts Pass, which is at 8,730 feet on SR4, reopened Thursday afternoon. Sonora Pass on SR108 reopened Friday, and SR89 over Monitor pass opened two weeks ago.
Caltrans crews began digging out from the deluge of winter storms on April 3, 2023. They finished clearing the road of all snow on SR4 last week and have spent the past few days repairing the road, as well as clearing away debris and shoring up several flooded areas between the closure points from Lake Alpine to Wolf Creek. There may be some controls in place as they continue roadwork in some areas.
Crews continue to make headway on SR120 at Yosemite. Graders are coming in from each the west and east ends and have almost met. There is a webpage updated every Friday on the current status of Tioga Pass and Glacier Point Road (see here - https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm)
