Tuesday: Numbers Fire south of Gardnerville now at 18,000 acres and 0% containment

UPDATE 7:335 p.m.: Douglas County officials say the Numbers Fire has now reached 18,000 acres and is 0% contained. The recommended evacuations for the Bodie Flats and Pineview areas have been lifted. Only residents are allowed to these areas. Please drive safely, watch for emergency vehicles, and be ready for possible future instructions in an ever-changing situation.

Multiple local, state, and federal agencies continue to work on containing the fire using dozers, hand crews, and aircraft.

UPDATE 4:15 p.m. Tuesday: The Numbers Fire is estimated to be 7,500 acres and is 0% contained. Multiple local, state and federal fire agencies are assisting and there are numerous fire apparatus and firefighters working on the scene. Equipment on the scene includes dozers, hand crews and aircraft. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Evacuations

The Douglas County Community and Senior Center is now open to receive evacuees. Reverse 911 notifications went out for most of the eastern part of the Valley and the Pine Nuts. Douglas County is asking residents to stay aware and to respond to Search and Rescue and the members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office or Emergency personnel. Residents in the area should remain vigilant, aware of their surroundings, and have an evacuation plan.

Donations

The Fairgrounds are not currently taking donations at this time due to COVID. Donations can be taken to the Douglas County Community and Senior Center.

The County and East Fork Fire are currently accessing costs incurred by the fire and the possibility of a Fire Management Assistance Grant.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m. Tuesday: The large plume of smoke from the Numbers Fire can be seen from Alpine Meadows cameras. It is now being mapped at roughly 7,500 acres with 0% containment according to Douglas County. US395 is still closed in both directions from Holbrook Junction to Riverview Road. There have been no evacuation orders lifted.

The air quality is 109 in Carson City and 102 in the Carson Valley.

UPDATE 12:00 p.m. Tuesday: The Numbers Fire is still burning south of Gardnerville with 0% containment at this time. One structure has been lost as well as ten outbuildings.

No evacuations have been lifted. Power had been shut to homes in the area and NV Energy is currently working to restore power where they can.

Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch is still reporting 4,500 acres burned, Douglas County is reporting "roughly 5,000 acres."

All road closures are still in place.

Smoke from the Numbers Fire created a layer of smoke with reduced air quality around the Carson Valley this. Some improvement is expected by early afternoon as west winds (lighter than usual) pick up and better mixing occurs. But it will also depend on fire activity.

The current AQI for the Carson Valley is 109. When AQI values are above 100, air quality is considered to be unhealthy, at first for members of populations at greatest risk of a health effect, then for the entire population as AQI values get higher (greater than 150).

UPDATE 8:00 a.m. Tuesday: The Numbers Fire burning south of Gardnerville has reached over 4,500 acres according to the Sierra Front Dispatch Center. US395 remains closed in both directions from SR208 Holbrook Junction and Riverview Road in Gardnerville. Multiple agencies are on the scene.

UPDATE 11:00 p.m.: Fire is currently burning on both sides of US395 south of Gardnerville and has reached over 2,500 acres. The highway remains closed in both directions. Multiple homes have been evacuated in the Pine View Estates and Bodie Flat area and the areas are listed below in the 10:00 p.m. update. UPDATE 9:35 p.m.: East Fork Fire says the fire is currently burning on both sides of US HWY 395 south of Gardnerville and the road remains closed in both directions about 15 miles north of Topaz Lake. Multiple homes have been evacuated in the Pine View Estates and Bodie Flat area. Multiple local and federal fire agencies assisting. There is an advisory for the Ruhenstroth area. The fire has been established as the #numbersfire.

UPDATE 9:00 p.m.: An East Fork Fire battalion chief says the fire has grown to 2,500 acres. No containment or control at this time. Pinenut Road is closed with recommended evacuations for homes in the area. Carson Valley Inn has been established as an evacuation site for anyone needing a place to stay due to homes evacuated. Because of health and safety precautions from the COVID-19 pandemic, Douglas will not open the community center and senior center at this time.

UPDATE 8:54 p.m.: The fire continues to push north toward Pinenut Road, forcing the closure of the road, according to East Fork Fire via dispatch. It is unknown at this time if any structures have burned.

UPDATE 8:44 p.m.: An evacuation center is being established at Carson Valley Inn.

UPDATE 8:25 p.m.: According to Douglas County officials, there's evacuations for residents in the Bodie Flats area and Pine View Estates due to the fire. Douglas officials advised all people to avoid the area. The county has issued a reverse 911 call for residents in the vicinity. Deputies are notifying Pine View Estates residents and are checking on residents on the west side of the highway.

A Red Flag fire weather warning was issued earlier Monday for the entire western and Northern Nevada region through 9 p.m. Monday.

This is a developing story. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. We will update as more information becomes available.

East Fork Fire is reporting multiple brush fires Monday evening south of Gardnerville in which evacuations are underway. Details of the spread of the fires are unknown at this time, but Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports fires have been reported in the Bodie Flats area located near US Highway 395, approximately 4.5 miles south of Gardnerville.

According to East Fork Fire, areas of concern are off of Ray May Way, where there are structures threatened in the area of Walker Street. Aircraft are attacking the fires before nightfall.

Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports the first fire was reported at around 7 p.m.

Multiple agencies are responding, including Carson City Fire Department, Tahoe Douglas Fire, Central Lyon, Storey County, Reno, Incline Village, the U.S. Forest Service and CalFire.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has been called to assist traffic control. Traffic along Highway 395 in the area of the fire is closed at Riverview Drive and China Springs Road. All motorists are advised to stay out of the area and to look for alternate routes.
