$23,000 in fines to date as almost half of VHRs permits expire South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Measure T was approved by voters in 2018, all vacation home rentals (VHRs) not in a commercial zone or the tourist core area would be gone by December 31, 2021. No permits are being renewed this year outside of those two exempt areas.

Between January and June, 430 VHRs were phased out in South Lake Tahoe with 492 permits remaining as of June 1, 2021.

Each month the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has tracked records concerning VHR permit activity since January 2021:

430 VHR permits have expired and were closed
• 98 are now changed to long term rentals (more than 30 days)
• 183 removed all ads
• 98 were advised to remove ads that show no availability
• 23 received $1,000 citations for un-permitted VHR ads
• 6 now QVHR
• 22 Sold
62 additional VHR permits were closed due to the home being sold or other
reasons.

QVHRs are "qualified vacation home rentals," and are a part of Measure T. Homeowners who are permanent residents of the City of South Lake Tahoe can vacation-rent the entire dwelling that is their permanent residence for up to 30 (consecutive or non-consecutive) days total per one-year permit period.

SLTPD staff will continue to monitor and take enforcement action on
VHR violations.
