Bread & Broth 4 Kids moves from summer program to school year bags of food

Now that the Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) summer program came to an end on August 26, the backpack school program resumes and will once again provide weekend food bags to Lake Tahoe Unified School District children. Bags will be available to qualified families at four school sites (Sierra House, Bijou, Tahoe Valley and South Tahoe Middle School) and school bus stop locations every Friday beginning September 4. As the bus drivers deliver breakfast and lunch to the students, the bags will be handed out.

The weekend bags contain seven individual, kid-friendly, nutritious meals (two breakfasts, two lunches, and three dinners) as well as fresh fruit and nutritious snacks. These bags help supplement and meet basic nourishment needs for children over the weekend.

Bread & Broth (B&B) volunteers will be packing the bags at St. Theresa Grace Hall and Heavenly Mountain Resort, an on-going supporter of the B&B program, is providing Heavenly team members and a van for delivery to the school buses.

LTUSD bus drivers will hand out these BB4K food bags to students at the designated school sites and bus route locations. This distribution will continue as long as students in the district continue to receive school instruction remotely. Once school is back in session the process will accommodate the cohort and in-class needs.

Parents need to fill out the free and reduced lunch program sheet provided with back-to-school packets prior to the September 4 BB4K food bag distribution. Filling out this form also gives family large discounts on the Chromebook insurance.

Food bags will also be delivered to several child care centers in South Lake Tahoe for children who are not of school age. Choices for Children (1029 Takela Drive #1, South Lake Tahoe) will also have bags available for pick up.

In addition to the kids program, B&B COVID-19 Emergency Food Program is also giving out bags of food every Monday (4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.) and Friday (3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.) at St. Theresa Grace Hall (1041 Lyons Ave.) to anyone who is in need food. Thanks to our generous donors and volunteers, bags are filled with dairy products, meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, and breads and pastries.
