Three killed on Highway 50 near Fresh Pond

Three people were killed late Sunday night on Highway 50 in El Dorado County when the vehicle they were in went off the roadway and hit a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 11:50 p.m. east of the town of Fresh Pond.
Four people were inside an SUV when the driver missed a curve and caused the vehicle to go about 100 feet down a steep embankment, officers said.
The vehicle hit a tree, which ripped the top off of the SUV. Two women and a man were thrown from the vehicle and the fourth person, who was wearing a seat belt, survived the crash, the CHP said.
He managed to climb back to the top of the hill and flag down another car. He was taken to the hospital.
There was no sign of drugs of alcohol, officers said.
According to the El Dorado County Sheriff's website, two of the victims was a 34-year-old male and a 37-year-old woman. No names have been released.
