Andrew Herrera, a junior at South Tahoe High School (STHS), continues to rack up awards in the wrestling world.
After playing football for the STHS varsity team on Friday night, Herrera headed to the Wild West Folkstyle wrestling tournament in Sacramento where he competed in their "pre-season showdown" on October 5.
After a first round forfeit, Herrera pinned 285-pound Gunnar Gardener from the Dark Horse Wrestling Club in Sacramento. The next match was against Mark Mendabayar from Inderkum High School. After amassing an 11-1 lead, Hererra then scored 13 points before he pinned his opponent.
Tournament officials combined the heavier wrestlers so the 16-year-old had to compete against wrestlers up to 285 pounds, 80 pounds heavier than himself.
Another sports filled weekend for Herrera. After the STHS football game on October 9 he'll head off the hill and wrestle in another tournament on October 11.
